factory diff breather

Post by Bugcatcher »

I've just had a look under my 93 lwb vitara to see what i needed to extend the diff breathers, after doing a search on the forum i expected to have to prize the caps off to put on the hose, but the zook already has hose running up behind the back guard on the back, and a hose that runs up to a clip on the top radiater hose on the front, it all looks factory. Is this normal for a vitara?
I plan on running a longer hose from the back diff to the engine bay, maybe hooking the T-case and gear box breathers up, than hooking the front breather to it and putting a filter on, does this sound right?

yes, Mr Suzuki did have plans for the vitara from factory. rear guards will fit a 32" tyre before cutting is needed.

and the diff and gearbox breathers are all factory. no caps like the hilux's and sierra's.

the rear breather is quite good, in that it runs up into the body under the tail lights and if you take out the left (i think) tail light, you will see the end of the hose. there is really no need to extend the rear on all the way to the front, as where it is now, it will be safe from water. just extend it if its not reaching or allowing full suspension flex. then put a filter on the end of the hose and leave it.

on the front, the diff breather goes up to the radiator hose, you can extend this to the firewall, and put a filter on the end of it. the front diff does not move, so excess is not neccessary.

same with the transfer and gearbox, they both connect to a "T" piece, and the outlet hose is only a few inches long. take this off, connect new extended one and run up to next to the front diff breather hose on firewall, and put a filter on the end of it.

done.

note: on the top of the gearbox, there are 3 little rubber gromets too, these can sometimes fall out, and leak GB oil everywhere, and also let water in. if there is no oil everywhere, you are probabaly safe to say they are still there.

Early Lux's had well raised factory breathers on the diffs
