In my opinion, most autos that are fittable without major fabbing work, are all electronically controlled by an ecu, so to me it makes more sense to change the motor at same time. And then theres no need for adaptor plates etc.
Autos sap a bit of power, so upping the donk may be wise anyway.
I looked into converting a 3sp trimatic from a corrolla, but decided was too much work, for fitting something even older than me truck.
Auto from Jimny is fairly easy to fit, but needs a ecu, so jumny donk and computer would be good.
Vitara 3speed autos, early carbed Vitaras, are as easy to bolt to donk as you can get, but involve issues with output, because they have a t-case built in.

i have adapted a vitara 3 speed auto (holden trimatic) onto my g13bb.
this is the same block as any sierra..
to get around the t-case i poped it off which left the output spline and governer exposed, the sierra jackshaft slips strait onto the output shaft.
so i got a holden trimatic 2wd output extension housing and cut it to just clear the governer, then welded a flat ally plate with a hole in the centre to allow the output shft to go through then cut the shaft support from a sierra 5 speed extension housing and welded it to the flat plate..
(please note you do need to mill these parts to get them true).
this has worked great and is worth it for sure. it ends up just under 100mm longer than a sierra 5 speed. you just cut that out of the jackshaft which still leaves it long enough to be over the minimum of 220mm.

That sounds like a good idea. I have just fitted 5.14 gears so I really dont want to do away with my current transfer case. Do you have a rough idea on what a vit 3 speed auto would set me back (second hand of course)
With running the gears and only 31", should the standard 1.3 handle the loss of power the auto will take

a complete 3 speed auto from a vit is anywhere from a few hundred bucks all the way to $1000..
it will handle the loss yes.

try find the vitara box though.
if you get a normal holden trimatic you then need to buy a bellhousing (hard to find and big bucks) and a 4wd output shaft(usually just as expensive)
