Door handles and window winders....How do you take them off!

Hi,

I have been trying to take off the door handles. i unscrew the screw and can see the wire attached to the handle. How are they attached? and how do i take it off?

Also, is there a trick to taking off the window winder?

Taking a guess here....

do you only remove the surround of the handle? by holding the handle open and sliding the surround off it.

or if it comes off complete, the wire will have a 90 degree bend in the end of it. This goes into a little plastic piece that holds it on the handle.
This plastic, you need to turn it as it has a clip that attaches to the metal rod. Once this clip is dislodged, the rod can be slid out of the plastic, probably upwards.

thanks mate, it hold handle comes off in one peice. i can see the 90 deg bend. so i just need to rotate that wire and work on sliding it out of the plastic loop thats attached to the door handle. is that right?

First rotate the plastic bit, it clips over the top of the rod to keep it in place. be careful not to break it. once that is rotated, the rod will slip straight up and out. the plastic should stay in the handle section.

once you have it all out you'll see whats going on and realise how it works.

Window winders are usually held on by a C clip in a groove on the winder shaft. You can remove it with a small screwdriver, but that often ends with a lost clip as it flings off out the open door into the grass...

For a couple of bucks you can buy a 'window winder remover tool' like this one

from most car parts shops - you just stick it down in between the winder and the door trim and it unclips the C clip without launching it into orbit.

Door handle - undo the screw then slide the wole handle either forward or backl (i think it'sd back) about 1cm, then it comes out. Don't know how to completely remove it, but this will be enough to get the door card off.

Winder - get a rag right behind it, against the shaft, and keep rubbing/pulling back and forth on all angles - the clip will eventually catch onto the rag and come off, never to be seen again...

fishing hook works wonders on the wire clip that locks them to the splined bit , just get the hook and some pliers and ya all sweet

I use half of an old broken IC extractor (computer chip) you could also use a piece of wire (coat hanger) with then end bent into a slight hook it only has to catch on the end of the clip and pull it out. I have used both types and never had a real hassle removing them. be careful though about whic direction the hook is pointing you don't really want to damage your trims

Definately get one of the clip removers.. they will save u alot of anguish when bits of plastic start flying around :(
