QLD - No tray on ute question - is it legal?

Is it legal to drive around in QLD with no tray on your ute?

I cannot find the answer on QLD transport websites.

cant help with qld laws but i had a 350 1 tonner that i drove round in for ages with no tray but i fabbed up some guards to cover the tyres. always got pulled over but not for not having the tray on ;)

I don't see why not (if you have a bumper, lights, mudguards/flaps and everything else), since you can buy them that way. At QLD transport when you buy a cab chassis there is a box you have to tick for "intended construction". There is no box for "nothing" though. :D

You see it all the time, many without any form of wheel guards or mudflaps.

If you address the mudflap question, then you'd probably be ok. There may be some crashworthiness/crash compatibility issues that you might have to meet that may be difficult without a tray.

I dont see how the dealers could sell you a registered (asuming you bought it new) Ute without a tray if it wasn't legal/roadworthy. I actually never understood why they charge extra for the trays :? Its like asking if you want a bonnet with the car or sumthink :roll:

It is because lots of people don't want a tray, they want a pantec, tipper, tow-truck setup, etc...

I thought you register it as cab and Chassis, and you must have taillights and mudguards.

you would need to make sure theres no sharp edges etc, but aslong as you have the wheel covered with mudflaps and tailights mounted the correct distance apart you are fine.

Friend worked for Toyota (springwood QLD) and stated that he wasn't allowed to take a new D4D hilux home because it didn't have a tray on and it was illegal :!:

Ring the cops and department of transport to be safe ;)

What about the little things like mudguards, indicators, tail lights, brake lights etc. Did the D4D have those?

Don't remember Scott. It was brand new at the dealers lot; new truck without tray don't know what that has and doesn't have.

i drove my ute around for a few months with no tray, past cops dept. transport, etc no worries. just made sure still had very visible lights and mad mud flaps that were like wheel arches, went all the way over the tire - front to back - stopping anything from flying up from the tyres. u see plenty of neutes getting around with similar get ups...

quite often they dont come with rear lights mounted and they definantly dont have mudguards so no they wouldnt be roadworthy.

the new table top falcon utes come with out a tray ans have lights fitted all ready but no gaurds or flaps so ther still not legal to drive around even tho we do
range rover & series one landy!

I was told by my dealer...(car dealer that is) that i was aloud to drive my c/c straight to the intended fitter for the tray, so therefore no cruisen around for weeks with nothin.
