We put a GU on 35"pedes thru everything. Yes we got water in the car. But without even trying we did it in 9mins.
And the last group most that tried made the DNF. To the point that the last car did a 6min30sec (or something close to it).
Some of the high HP petrols and others that have spent a zillion dollars to make there cars go fast need to think about making them water tight. There where some very dumb things that made cars stop in the water. AirCompressers sitting low in the cab pressureiseing the dizzy. With the airintake on the compressor. This only turns an ARB compressor into a water pump. This team pumped water into there Dizzy.
Another car had a cup of water in the dizzy, yes the screws where tight but it didnt look like there was any gasket goo or the breather blocked.
Another was airintakes with pissweak seals and that was the blingest airbox I have seen.
Another teams having wiring (comp etc) mounted low in the car.
As for the other 2 day stages.
The water wasnt real deep. It was just long. But people did some silly things. There is only so many times you can put a car out the one part of the bank before it loads the winches up cos its boggy as hell. Team ARB northen (the melb one) Did well here on the first crossing. Picked a virgin bit of bank and virtually drive the whole crossing.
THe afternoon stage was fantastic. We had a great time pre running that one.
There where 33(i think) GPS points to be found. the first 8 points where all high speed (Cass was absolutlyflying was good to watch). Then into the Lagoon for a big crossing, this wasnt deep. Darren Green and Sternbeck probably had the best crossings as they chose unused bits of bank.
Then a small loop thru the scrub and thru the lagoon again. Al McMullen had the best go at this. Nothing like watching a Jeep at full noise hit the water, in the proces just giving hte gate marker a love tap. then driving the rest and putting the wheels on the bank.
Next was a big run across the crab holes (this would of worked some shocks to death). Then into some really tight points near the Darling river. This tested peoples nav skills.
After finding another 15 points close togther it was another quick run to the western end of the course. Thru a small bog hole (this was waist deep but most got wheels on the other bank berfore getting stuck).
Quick run down to the mudrun. This was best done with the foot buried in the firewall and sticking to the middle. Any other lines tried ended up being bogged. And Kermit entered from the wrong direction so had the pleasure of driving it twice (this thing seemed to work well in it though - so drive this and the next obstacle no worrys).
Another quick squirt to the lagoon agian for shallow crossing down across trhe bank 100m.
Then it was time for the final crossing. This was angled across the lagoon and had teams using every ext they had. Including there brand new spare winch ropes (some where still in plastic). The poor navis by now where buggered. The better teams here had the drivers getting out of the car assisting.
I think Cass was fastest, with Kym 2nd, Rohan 3rd and kermit 4th. Cant remember there times though.

Aus4wd team managaed 30th which wasnt to bad missing 2 and half days of competition due to mechanicals.
Alan Cluthil & Caro were 10th
Kurmit (Adrain Cauchi I believer were either 7th or 8th ) top ten finishers which is a great achievement.

I also watched everycar go thru. None got water upto snorkle height. My guess is, either they stalled and water has come up the exhuast. Or There airintake had holes in it.

Ian / rog came 11th just msg'd me then sweet as! Sorry heath's TURBO NOT motor died I for one know he put heaps into it both time wise and design wise. I hope the ramp stole from heaths iveco falls on the cu&t that stole it cutting off their theiving hands! there is no punishment to harsh for theives.

I arrived home early this afternoon. Juzza and I placed 21st in our first OBC. We were just happy to finish, but a 21st placing is a bonus.
It was a great experience. I marshalled twice before in the OBC and Juzza also marshalled last year, but even that didn't prepare us for this event. Like all new competitors, we made heaps of mistakes early in the week and we slowly improved as the week ended. Thankfully we only DNF'd one stage, when the rope broke at Nundooka Air Locker. Also, it was a tough decision for me to DNS the night stage at Viewmont, but in the end, it turned out to be the right decision. We weren't the fastest in the field, but we were consistenly under DNF time. Even after I stuffed up at the sand wall, Juzza recovered the big GR8 GU to within seconds of the DNF.
We enjoyed every minute of it. Even the navigation stages are a blast of adrenalin. There is some rough country out there, specially when were blasting cross country at full speed, in the dark, looking for star pickets.
The big truck held together and we even drove it home today. There's a list of repairs to be done, but their minor items and some are just cosmetic. I bent the drag link, and that was replaced with a spare one that we were carrying. The cross member was pushed up so hard that the hand brake drum now touches the body.
Coil packs and water proof electrical wiring made a big difference in the mud. The turbo worked really well. Plenty of power on a straight line, but I was fighting the steering wheel all week. The suspension may have been too soft, as well as the Patrol being too heavy because of all the gear that we were carrying.
The Patrol had 200 litres of fuel, 30 litres of water and heaps of heavy spare parts. We were carrying a spare steering box all week, 2 axle/CV assembly, a rotor & hub, a massive bag of tools. Even unloaded we still had to carry all of this weight. If we're going to do it again next year, we'll have to reconsider the type of spares that we take. This is where strategy and planning comes into it. It's all a gamble on what can break.
