Good luck sniper. At least you know they will be all good for the next 5 or more years....Toyota were selling new hdt's for a discount price of 6k long...so some wreckers are up themselves with their prices....
Did the mechanic put 50 back in it???

I'm up for some serious dollars.
but I'm looking at it from the point of view that I'll know exactly whats been done to the ute now (I have to, I can't sit down & cry about it)
how'd you go with yours?
Joom....
OK bit of a newby question but how oftern do you have to do them and how does it effect the truck when they are gone.

Toli, I'm no mech but as far as I know, If you look after your rig with regular services, they should last a very long time, from experience, if I ever buy a second hand car again, this will be the very first thing I get replaced. you can do a shitload of damage if the bigends are rooted, even end up with a piston out the side of your motor (Leg out of bed).
a bloke I was talking to the other day has a 1990 nissan patrol ute with big end trouble, he bought another motor to put in & thought he'd wait for this one to let go before he put the new one in, its been ticking around for 2 years now.... its gotta go soon.

I have been told safest to replace them every 100k, this said 80`s were recalled by TMCA mine was recalled previously and replaced though i still redone them anyway just to be on the safe side. My mechanic said there was little sign of wear on my bearings at all....phew for me

Also timing belts should be changed every 100k and adjuster/tensioner also checked/replaced

when a car is recalled you should have a little square silver sticker some where on the vehcile (funny enough it does not have TMCA written anywhere on the sticker.

mums old 91 1HDT dropped #5 big end bearing at 208 000 km's back in April 2000, it chewed the crank and buggered the bore!!!

1 machined to the max crank + 6 machined to the max bores + 6 over sized pistons + over sized rings + new big end and main bearings + 2 months without car + 4 services @ 2500km intervals to try and remove all traces of metal

= around $8000!!!!

And we were told we got out of it cheaply, some people have had it drop pistons and some even throw pistons through the block. We shoulda just got a 6.5L V8

We were told to change the big ends every 100 000kms! So we learnt after that!

AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH

Done an oil change last night, used valvoline 15W40 as directed by TMCA and rattle f*#kin rattle again.......

Next week i will change it back to penrite 15W50 as what my mechanic used when he done my bearings as the noise had disapered.
Took it to him today he has no idea what it is. He told me he has heard it on many cruisers 1HD and 1HZ and they cant find a reason for this.

im not :bad-words: happy

I have been a slack ass, and not replied for a while.
This is what happened.
Changed the oil from valvoline 15W40 (recomended by toyota)
to penrite 15W50
the noise decreased straight after the changed till it just disapered and is now gone.
Although i am not entirely sure that it was the oil that done rectifed this, but that is all i have changed.
So i will stick with using penrite from now on.

oil

Post by Toli »

That is strange. I did the oil change with the valvaline 15w 40(got it at repco on sale) I have had no problems. The guy I got the truck off had been using valvaline for the entire time he had it 20w 40.

If that one works stick with it I say. Know idea why it would make such a big difference with the 2 different oils.

So far my bill is $13,800 and likely to be another couple of grand as this is just for the parts.

Totally reconditioned motor as everything was stuffed cost be $7,700 (1HDT) (Just the engine not fitting) then the pump was cactus so it cost me $2,200, then there is the turbo, I think it was a bit under $2000. I think these prices are trade prices or close to it but I could be wrong. Needed 6 injectors, I think $750, CV's $260( Labour included). Anyway dam these Cruisers can cost some $. Luckily I sold my house otherwise me the mrs and the mini foxies would be pulling the caravan by hand.

Turns out someone would have filled the engine and everything else with sand and Ocean water, patched her up and sold it to me. I look on the bright side and at least the engine will last me, I just now have to cross my fingers that the Auto and transfer case are ok.

Good Luck with your Cruiser :D

Nah, the knock is coming from the sound through the bell housing. Reminds you of a stuck injector(which it isnt).
As long as it stays goooone im happy. I had no performance issues or anything with or with out the noise, just anoyed the hell out of me.

I feel for you though 4WD Stuff, got the bum end of that deal with your cruiser. But like you say, you know whats done now and should last a looooong time now.

The valvoline oil is used by others I know also with no probs, and I dont think the oil change really rectified the problem....but its gone and thats the main thing. And like mentioned it happened straight after my oil change.
