my sierra is blowing white smoke

Post by beaver700 »

I was in Armidale on the weekend and decided to drive to the coast (200k's) to the coast... It was pretty hilly, but going down the hills gave me the most trouble. Once I reached Dorrigo I started a 15km decend. All the way down while using engine braking white smoke was pouring out... I could smell fuel...Before this the sierra has been burping a bit....
Just not sure what the problem is, any ideas?

any help appreciated,

thanks

Has the motor used and oil or water. Pressure test your cooling system, as white smoke can often indicate water being burnt from leaking head/gasket. Also pull plugs, and check condition. If you have 3 dirty and 1 clean or similar then wind motor over with plugs out, see if any coolant comes out of plug holes. Can also be brake fluid entering combustion chamber, check vacum line to booster for brake fluid ingress. Possibly oil smoke if slightly grey too, if it happened when you were doing a lot of engine brakeing (high manifold vacum) then could be valve stem seals too.

Rich mixture from flooding should be black smoke, unless its pumping pretty much unburnt fuel out exhaust.

Gday.

Thanks for your immediate help guys. The engine is a g13a, from a 1987 model. It uses a little bit of oil, say around 500ml every 1000-2000 k's (sory I havent really checked precisely), but recently I checked it to be low a week before I went on the trip. I changed the oil a few days ago... Will check coolant levels today. It was running well and blowing no smoke up until I went down the hill... and about 5 mintues after reaching the bottom of the hill, driving at 80, the whiteish-grey smoke disappeared.

Sorry or the long post, thankd for your help,

So it was a greyish blue tinge smoke, or bright white. Were you compression breaking or idling lots just before. If your valve stem seals are leaking, they would have sucked the oil down, onto the plugs making them foul and missfire. This will also cause the fuel smell, as the fuel is not gettin burnt in the cylinder. Do this test. Start the zook up, let it idle and warm up, then when its been idling for 5 min and warm, get someone to to stab the throttle a couple of times, hard and sharp. Watch the exhaust and see if there is oil smoke coming out. Also pull ya plugs and look at their condition. See if they are wet and oily, or black and carbon deposited.
