can you run a sd33 on LPG

Post by damiensmq »

Hi, i recently bought a 86 mq that was 80% restored, when i got it home and unloaded all the bits and peices out of the back that the previous owner stuffed in there i found a complete LPG setup, tank, mounts, etc. I asked my local mechanic if you can run a diesel motor on LPG and he said yes you can with many benefits but he wasnt sure on how it was done. Has anyone here seen or done an LPG conversion on a diesel motor (SD33) and what modifications are involved to run LPG safely. Appreciate any feedback members can give me. Thank you

I did browse the forum but didnt spot anything that looked promising.

yes you can as said by grimbo as LPG fumigation, burn rate up to 95% eficiency and as such more eccinomical, low corbon amount produced so service intervals increased and power / torque increased, bout 4k to install

4K!!!!!

where do you go???

lots of commercials over here use lpg ..BUT as stated it must be used with diesel as well..look at it as a catalist..helps the diesel burn better and cleaner..so less emmisions(thats why its used here.tax break.etc)AND more power!!!but then if you use the power dont expect better economy!!

its available here as a kit to install onto landrover 300tdi (discovery etc).the kit consists of microcomputer/injection unit pipes etc.£400.

i enquired as to other vehicles.reply as long as has turbo(to allow microcomputer to monitor boost etc) it will work ...now this kit uses propane bottle..BUT there is no reason why second hand lpg tank cant be used..just be sure to take feed from tank from ABOVE lpg as you want gas not liquid..pressure regulator.means of metering gas depending upon boost.injector nossel..done..easy..(there is more to it than that.ie no injection on tick over etc.but it is real simple)

next project on my sd33t will be diy system..

oh the yanks have used this for years..check on binder bulliten forum..loads about it there..

Thanks everyone, a wealth of info..... and thanks kingy, ill be going through all those threads you suggested.

Iv'e been told that the injector pump needs to be trimmed back to about 95% and include lpg at about 5% through the mixer connected to the air cleaner. I'm currently having the tank tested to make sure its ok and then ill set it all up and give it a go. The benefits seem huge though i do wonder why more trucks on the road dont use this system if it gives more power and more importantly better fuel consumption due to the increased power. ie a diesel motor that has to work less uses less diesel and not forgetting a cleaner motor needs less servicing and has a greater life span.

Ill keep on researching and let you all know what i find out

Cheers
Damien

atleast that here in uk.(where veg oil is taxed the same as diesel!!(barstards)

how you gonna control amount of lpg injected??

But where's the revenue collection in that?
Its comming ..........

2009 is the selected year to apply the "fuel levy" to LPG !

the most expensive part of the proper kits is the computor, for LPG fumigation to work properly it need to be monitored, the right kit also allows seemless changover to stright deisel if you cant get LPG or run out, they go up to around 4.5k but remember a lot of cost is in the labour and certification etc.

there are kits in the 2.5k region, but they tend not to work very well and I have heard of plenty of problems with them as well as issues with no LPG available.

on trucks, the cost goes to around 12k minimum installed, but even that figure has paid for itself in the 8month region on most long haul trucks, the guys that we use to do our kits mainly do trucks, and they get guys drive from WA for installs, one guy who got a system installed a coupls of months ago who does a lot of kays reckons based on the figures he is getting, that it will have paid for itself in 5 months, install was 18k
