My gq with a TD42 will not rev above approx 2800 rpm without difficulty.
I have replaced the diesel filter and have checked for the filter in the injector pump but someone has removed it.Sometimes when accelerating it will start to bog for want of a better word and when I throttle off a bit it will accelerate again.This pump has no problems with leaking or with over fueling.The air filter is new.
Any suggestions ?

My TD4.2 when I first bought it had trouble reving over 3000-3500, then after shocking fuel figures came in I wound the fuel screw back near 1/3 of a turn from memory.
For some reason I could then rev through 3000 to 4000 easily compared to before, no other work was done only this between runs.
Not saying it's your problem although if I did not get lucky I would still be searching for a fix, bad economy was 18L/100km easy driving after turning screw I seem mostly to be at 12L/100km easy driving.

it's in fairly deep.
This "thimble" filter is only about 3-4mm in diameter.
Clean up around the top of the injector pump
Looking straight down from above.
The banjo fitting on the inlet section of the pump is the one that is closest to the front of the engine and has a steel fuel line which runs to it via the gap between the back of the pump and the block. The line that feeds the fitting runs between the pump and the block.
Undo this bolt, and remove it.
There should be enough movement in the banjo fitting to push it clear of the hole it feeds beneath the fitting, or you can just work through the hole in the fitting the bolt came out of (harder).
I have a set of Snap-on dental picks I use for this (I check it every service) but a length of small diameter, stiff wire, with the last 2-3mm bent at right angles should do the same job, or a piece of the stainless backing strip you get when you change your wiper blades is good too ( I save everything)
Now feel down inside the pump, about 15-20mm deep, and try to hook the filter out. It is a stainless gauze filter (approx 3mm deep, 3-4 mm in dia), with a brass ring around the top edge.
Note;I have heard stories that some patrols do not have this filter, but between me and my 2 wheelin' mates in total we have had 6 TD42's from 89-96, and all of them had this filter.
Clean it out with compressed air and replace it.
I have the part number for this filter and advise against running without it as it saves pump and injector problems.
It is not listed in Nissan's electronic parts catalogue, like about a dozen other things, but can be ordered from them and I think from memory they are about $10Aus. I will post the part number when I find it.
If this does not solve the problem, consult a specialist diesel injection serviceas your pump may need some work.
Please post your patrols age and alleged mileage.
I have looked twice now for that bloody filter ans assumed it was not there.
I just took a pic and have given the area a clean I will check the front fitting (I have only searched the rear one!!!!). Will take a pic of the little bugger when (if ) I find it.

HOLY SHIT I have a new car! the difference is amazing , my filter was fully clogged with black crap and also lots of paper fibers (from the fuel filter).
I now need to learn how to do 60kph again the throttle setting I always used has me speeding! Not to mention it now has some get up and go, well as much as these things have anyway.
Also now have an extra 250rpm at idle and the power is so smooth compared to before.
Thanks very much currently for the detailed explanation, it's probably saved me a premature pump rebuild or at least delayed it.
This pump is only 140k old.
For roga or anyone who might venture a go at it, here is a pic of the filter while still dirty some of the cellulose fibers can be seen sticking out, I could only get it 70% clean so currentlyoffline if you can post the part number it would be great!
The filter is in under the spring in the pic so it is a fair way down. IMO 50K is too long not to clean or replace this little creature.

you'd be amazed how many mechanics aren't even aware of it's existence. I've tipped a few mates off, including the local NRMA mechanics, who service upwards of ten TD42's.
We were having big problems with our TD42 on the farm, rang the nearest dealer (who we bought from) and asked to talk to the head mechanic who tipped me off on where it was and how to fix. (they do a lot of mine vehicles)
I just use a piece of oxy welding wire bent into a hook.

It's the front fitting, once the spring (it's only there to stop the filter floating) is removed if there is not enough light to see down to the brass ring which sticks out like mutleys balls get a torch. If you still cannot see the ring don't bother digging for it someone has considered it surplus to requirement

Sorry, I haven't gotten back to you, I am a shift worker and I worked 28 hours out of a 48 hour weekend and I am on night shift tonight
This gauze filter is there to protect your pump, should your fuel filter start to break down, or if anything happens to make it past the filter.
Nearly all fuel filters, and I've tried most of them from fleetguard to Sakura, Ryco, Repco, Baldwin etc. shed fibres from their filters.
After a bit of experimenting I have found BOSCH filters seem to work the best, judging by what makes it past the filter, to the gauze mesh.
Now I know it is possible to run without this filter in place by removing the filter and the spring that holds it in place, but I would prefer to check this small annoying filter than suffer the expense of a pump rebuild, and having my injectors rekitted/replaced, or even worse, suffer FNQ's problem, when I am hundreds of K's from anywhere.
I have always put it back in, and I have filled up in some very remote locations, with some pretty dodgy fuel and my pump has never been out, my injectors never touched and I have done 250k in my GQ, so why would I take that chance now. Leave it out at your peril !
BTW I am still looking for that part number, last time I bought 3 of them, cheap pump insurance I reckon
