10,000 or 12,000 winch

Post by bundyrum4x4 »

I currently run an old 10,000 warn wich on a long Mav. I have the option of getting a 12,000 warn only used once by a lifting company for the right price. The current winch works perfectly but by getting the new bigger winch I gain the bigger 4.6 motor and more pulling power though I will gain some more waight over the front. Is it worth changing over? :?:

I doubt it. There are question marks over the reliability of the newer 4.6hp motor and if you have had no problems with your current one I would just keep that.
I doubt that extra 2000lbs capacity would help much especially if winching with a snatch block.
I changed from a 10,000lb low mount to the 8000lb high mount and don't regret it - it is much faster and is better to use with Plasma rope.

Thanks TuffRR, sort of what I was thinking. I have looked at going to the high mount but funds are currently going towards a turbo. The only reason I considered this is that I could get my money back on the 12000 by selling the 10000. I may even have made a little profit.

Keep an eye out for a cheap second hand high mount. I sold my 10,000lb low mount and with the funds bought a 8,000lb high mount, had it competition prepared (ie breathers, braced, upgrade brake etc) and got 45 metres of plasma rope.

$1,100 off the top of my head. That was with two winch cables and in good condition. I think i was lucky to get that much for it. :D

Isn't a 12,000 just a 10,000 with lower gearing & a bigger diamater cable?

Same cable as the 10000 just different gearing, and slightly larger in size.

Can some one tell me where the best place is to get plasma rope from and how much per meter I should be looking at. I am running a 9000lb warn lowmount.

Around $11 a metre for 8mm and around $15 for 9mm you will need 9mm for comps as there is usually a restriction on use of 8mm.

Can't remembr the name of the distributor in Victoria I will do a search for ya.

Can't find a Web site but I swore I have seen the prices listed somewhere maybe in one of the 4x4 mags prolly 4x4 monthly. Yeah definately in one of them don't have one at hand but I am sure in the last couple of months it has been in the Hardcore equipment section.
