Bought diesel 80 series - Woot Woot

Post by Bluey »

ok guys, hopefully buying a 80 series very soon, and need some advice on what to get. want to get a diesel, will be used to get to work (currently 5k trip atm, will be 20k in year or so), some but not much family stuff, and 4wd trips (without/with family hence the 80 series). aiming at 35" claws/36" simexs/37" claws (not sure yet), and suspension lift 2-3" ? and 2" bl.

my budget is around $30k. (plus sale of the middy)
want something that has done little to no offroad, less than 200k km. here are a couple i have found, bugger all 1HD-FT around

90 turbo diesel (1HD-T) sahara auto, factory elec winch, 2" spring lift, ranchos, factory dual batteries, sunroof, 157k for $22k

95 standard (1HZ), 168k for $16k

97 standard (1HZ), safari turbo, snorkel, turbo timer, drawers, boost gauge, 35" xterrains, 2" bl and 4" spring, 3" exhaust, 156k for $29k5

so what do you guys reckon, should i go for any of the above or maybe 95 - 98 turbo diesel (1HD-FT)????

Chhers and sorry about long post

Buy the 95 standard, and tick up the options - you'll be in front compared to the 97 there. You can get if you hunt:
Turbo $3K
Snorkel $350
Turbo Timer $200
Body lift - $500
3" coils are better and you can fit 38"s under it easy! $1000 inc shocks
3" exhaust - @$500
castor correction and brake lines and panhards - @$1000

So far only $8k.... So you are the same for $24K with a few more k's.
and everythings new - a bonus as you know what you are getting.

Extras... - ie two sets of tyres n rims - Drawers, lights etc... Boost gauage is like $70! Spend $300 on a good Pyro setup and then $1000 on an intercooler - you'll be happier in the heat and make the engine live longer!

My thoughts anyways - just depends on useage.
80 Series Turbo - the Toy car...
XR6 Turbo - the work car...
XW wagon - the dogs car...

You can find some a bit cheaper also if you aint in a hurry, but i would deffinetly go the turbo diesel 1HD-T or even if you find a 1HD-FT, in the mid to late 20`s im sure you will find a 1HD-FT.

You cant go past factory turbo over an aftermarket turbo system IMO

thanks for the replies guys. i think i'm leaning to factory turbo, just not sure if pre 95 (heaps around), or post 95 (bugger all, haven't many at all). does anyone know if the 1HD-T is direct or indirect injection?

factory diff locks/winch/etc ie sahara does sound good mad cruiser, my favourite so far. fairly low kms, just not sure if good idea getting a 16y old car or not considering i'm upgrading now, and probably won't again for at least 5 years. or more

oh, and does anyone know of a decent site/company that will search for me, i'm struggling to find things - takes me hours every night with my slow dial up. and don't suggest that guy advertising in general chit-chat dealing in zebras, too high class for me

thanks again guys

All factory turbo 80 series motors were direct injection. That's 1HDT and 1 HDFT. I agree with you .. go the Sahara.

thanks simo63 and sniper, i rang about the sahara today. sounds pretty good, bummer is i gotta wait for my finance (1 - 1 1/2 weeks) before i can buy. i'm actually going to melbourne next week (8/may) for my tafe block release, money should be sorted then and i can get me a new(er) cruiser  was a bit confused about the seller mentioning sahara ice/coolbox, now i know he actually meant a fridge

it definately going to be a factory turbo diesel, gotta be better than the crappy black oil inducing indirect diesel (like my current 3b)

I think also that 93/94 upwards had the twin cam engine and didnt have the dodgy bearing problem which isnt a major issue on the earlier ones. The vehicle Should have been done as Toyota did a recall on them. Just ask and see, if not get the chassis no and take to Toyota and they will be able to tell you if they were done or not. Big damage bill if they let go .I have heard of blokes replacing bearings as it is apparently only a $ 450 job every 100k just to be on the safe side. This is also my next vehicle, in fact I'm going to check one out today Regards Steve M

bloody banks, taken ages to organize finance. should be cashed up thursday, so maybe finally i can get my new car

options are similar to last time:

95 DX: unknown kays (haven't rung yet), aftermarket turbo, SAAS seats, rear locker, kaymar rear step & wheel holder, bar, steps. $22700

93 factory TD: 173k, manual, "little offroad use". $25000

90 TD Sahara: yep still around, now $21000

97 DX: 136k, ex vic police car, standard police options?, ome sus, snorkel, pto winch. $19500

97 DX: 156k, bar and tow bar, dual tanks, snorkel, lift. $20500. but in qld, bit too far to drive home i think

so, what do you guys think? almost strayed to the dark side (very dark), dicovery v8

:? . being offered 97 petrol 3.9, 104 thou kays for $11500, but i work out all driveline mods needed plus gas i end up similar price of the cruisers. also very good patrol too, but is petrol. i prefer the drive of a diesel, even thou this one is on gas too.

any one got a real cheap post 95 factory turbo diesel ;) . maybe sahara ;)

i would of though for sure you would get a 96 model TD fatory for around 26k-30k, seen heaps when i was looking but couldnt afford that much.

Personally i wouldnt touch the aftermarket turbos if i was able to get an original TD cruiser. In my opinion will never be as good as the factory (thats my opinion, anyone dont like tuff)

I got my cruiser for around the 16k mark 1990 GXL TD but had 285 on the clock. Runs smooth as.

I've got a 91 Factory TD for sale at the moment but not even had a nibble at $19500. It has all the gear, EFS suspension, injectors reco'd, 285's BFG uhf, spots, 228000k's etc etc and in very good nick, why isn't anyone that lives in Brisbane keen on 80 series, I bought it for over 20k only a couple of years ago stock as a rock, and have spent 1000's on it. I have it on car sales and it seems reasonably priced but no interest. Am I aiming too high or what?

Bluey, go the factory turbo, you will regret it if you don't...
see if you can have a yarn to the dude above with the 91td, I have a 91 with 275k (bought it with 150k) & has not had a spanner layed on it.
the most important thing with buying a TD cruiser, CHECK THE LOG BOOK, on a cruiser, the k's don't matter unless it has a bad service record. speaking from very recent experience on a 75 ute.....

Go the Sahara, Gotta love that little fridge right under your arm left arm

Mums 91 TD threw big end bearings at 208 000kms, no car for 8 weeks and $6500+ later we got the car back. And the motor has never been the same since, smoke blowing p.o.s. service every 5K, Dont let it get Hot, and change the big ends every 100k (just to be on the safe side!) and she'll probly go for ever.

Yeah aiming too high for it

I bought my Diesel 80 series 5 years ago for 13 000 and now probably worth 8000 even though it's a monster. You'll never get your money back no matter how much you spend on it

1990 GXL TD
Just got the
bullbar (hate the aluminium ones, had to have steel)
snorkel
rhino sport roof racks
IPF spotties
enforcer suspension
the rest is just GXL spec

next..
Lift kit and 5 link front
rear bar with carrier
diff locks
in that oreder

now TMCA recalled all 80`s for there big end bearings, so all should be changed, that said i still replaced mine anyway. They had very little wear on them but better safe then sorry. Also replaced timing belt and tensioner. evry 100,00 do the lot ;) cost me all up fir this $860 (ps. dont change your oil before you do your big end bearings  )

ok update time

bought a 95 gxl diesel with aftermarket turbo on friday night in sydney, drove to melbourne saturday, boat to tassie and got her home lunch time sunday. :D :D

stoked with it, goes great and features galore (esp from middy).
Safari turbo, 3" exhaust with stainless flex joint
187 000 kays, 1HZ manual
roof console with uhf, 2 aerials
ome coils and shocks
7(8?) seats
cd player with remote, air con that works
33" silverstones - man these are loud, seem lot worse than my 35 claws
home made spare wheel carrier

plans are:
1. 2" body lift - done some searching, looks fairly easy but do i need to mod gear sticks and steering
2. 35 - 36 claws or simexs
3. tube front bar
4. proper sliders
5. upgrade work on winch - bigger motor, plasma or similar
6. diff ratios to suit tyres, detroit in rear, air locker front if funds allow
7. maybe new rear bar
8. cargo barrier is a must, seat covers to stop kiddies trashing cloth seats
9. um, sure there is more ....

very happy, can't wait to see how far i can push this one
