2.8 Hilux Fuel Consumption

2.8 Hilux Fuel Consumption
I am just after a rough estimate as to the fuel consumption of a 2.8L diesel NA Hilux. Also will a turbo kit make it use more fuel or less?
thanks in advance
thanks in advance
Consumption in any vehicle largely depends on driving style/conditions. If you hammer it in low range on the sand with a 2 tonne payload in the back then you could expect some pretty shitty fuel figures. It depends on how you drive/use it.
Turbos theoretically should decrease fuel consumption Because more power = less stress on the engine in comparable circumstances. HOWEVER, the general rule is that if you have more power under your right boot then you will probably use it thus increasing consumption. And dont kid yourself, you will use it, so the answer generally is that you will use more fuel with a turbo.

Mine's using about the same with a turbo as well, running 35's.phippsy wrote:Mine is turboed and uses more when I keep the boot in, otherwise I get somewhere around 10kms/litre usually 500+ from a tank. It doesn't make much difference whether it's highway running or around the streets.
Try not to let your mind wander...It is too
small and fragile to be out by itself.

Mines a 2.8 with safari turbo kit and uses 9.1litres / 100km's when driven mixed country and town.
Use the highway run and hold 100-110 it jumps to 10l / 100km's.
Towing a tandem trailor loaded (total weight 1500kg and back of my 4runner SR5 with 300-400kg in it i look around the 12-13lm / 100km's.
Over all can't complain and appears that others are getting similar fuel.
Running only 9psi on turbo too. Motor has 228,000km's and is still going strong.

I guess it all depends on how you drive it, what turbo, and how the fuel pump is set up. With a DTS turbo kit (TD04 turbo) i got around an extra 100k's out of a tank. Without the turbo though my foot was to the floor most of the time. The turbo makes the engine more efficient overall buy using exhaust gas thats otherwise wasted so it should have better consumption in theory. I also noticed a lot less smoke after the turbo which to me means its burning more efficiently as well getting the most out of the the fuel. Keep it under 2700 rpm and youll get the best economy out of it, in fact the more you can coast along in 5th at 2000 rpm the better fuel consumption youll get. The best ive gotten out of a tank is about 570k's. A mate of mine who has a rodeo 2.8 diesel with the factory turbo recons he can get 700k's out of a tank taking it easy, i think the tank isnt much bigger than a lux, so i think how the turbo and fuel pump is set up makes a big difference.

fuel
Mine was getting 700ks to a tank before i got my timing belt done, but i think the previous owner must have dodgied the fuel mix because it has more power but only gets about 450-500ks now. I have had it checked twice and they say it is as per manufacturer specs. Adding LPG fumigation is meant to double your fuel economy and give the same power as a turbo; i will find out on the 25/1/06

You'll all dreamin
I've never got down to 10l/100ks
It's usually around 13-14l/100ks and have gone as bad as 18l/100
That's about 700ks out of my 129 lt tank.
Mind you I only ever check it when I'm on holidays loaded right up and towing the camper trailer at 100kph or more only slowing down for hills
Or slight inclines
LPG sounds good

I only ever Use 50 litres and Max of 350km. usually 300km
Always Past the red line when ever I fill. I just might have to run it empty to find out how big the tank is.
I have a Right foot the weight of a black hole.
My lux has two speed Idle and Flat out. Only time it comes of the firewall is when I hit the speed limit.
NO TURBO either.

307.7k 28lts
173.2k 16.34
390k took 35lts to fill. Each time to visual spot on filler neck.
hope this helps.

2.8 fuel Consumption
I have had my 2.8DX 1991 4 Runner for a month now. 2 tanks (65 ltrs)
9-10ltrs per 100kms. If I push her hard I use more. Not to bad really compared to my other car VT V6 auto, 14ltrs/100kms.
Can someone tell me about this LPG for diesels. How much, who does it in Sydney and what consumtion are we looking at? Any info/websites much appreciated.

Life is not a bowl full of Cherries!!
ARB, and alike sell them and any mechanic can also get his hands on them. Will cost you easily 3k for them to source and fit for you.
If you do it yourself will cost you under 1k, get a setup of a surf then bolt it up

Do a search on this forum for the Surf "CT20" setup and make your own mind up wether to go down this path or not. I had a Surf one ready to go but decided to sell it after reading a few of Dumbdunces posts. I got my DTS kit fitted and dyno'd for $2600. I just talked one of the mechanics in the turbo shop into do a cashy on a sunday for me and not tell the boss, so I got the kit at cost price plus a bit for labour and dyno.
Very happy with it too..

I get 10L/100 on the highway (11 with the aircon on) and about 13 normally, thats with a combo of 4wding, city and high speed stuff...

Re: 2.8 Hilux Fuel Consumption
I get anywhere from 9l to 11l per 100km in my 4runner. I played around with the air box and cut out the plastic shield that covers half of the air filter. It made throttle response a bit better. I also cut out the inlet pipe to the air box that connects up to the snorkel and replaced it with a bigger one (around 70mm). That mod made a pretty big difference. The motor will rev to 4500 rpm with no hesitation and will pull all the way. It drives more like a petrol car now. (It's also got a set of extractors and a 2 1/4 exhaust) I'm still haven't tried it off road since doing the mods! Not happy about that!
Re: 2.8 Hilux Fuel Consumption
iv got a 95 2.8 fitted with a turbo dyn kit, shes don 315 000 kms and get around the 400 mark out of the standard tank and it uses more on the hwy, prity horrible really

Re: 2.8 Hilux Fuel Consumption
i have a 1996 3l n/a and get pretty poor fuel econ out of it. it has a set of 31 muddies and thats about it. i know it is hard to say but wat revs should it sit on doing 100 kph. dont know wat diff ratios it has but it sits on 3000rpm at 100 klicks
Re: 2.8 Hilux Fuel Consumption
Standard tyres 10ltrs/100ks
32'' tyres made it worse 14ltrs/100 I guess it had to work harder to rotate the bigger wheels.
