Various mechanical issues

Post by russell2pi »

Hi all. I've just bought an 86 LWB TD pajero with a long list of things to fix from the professional vehicle inspection report. I'm hoping to do a lot of the minor things myself. Most of them I can handle but I was hoping for a bit of advice from forumites where my knowledge is lacking. I will get the Haynes manual so just ignore any questions you reckon would be covered in there!

1) Brake pulsing (severe). I guess this might be a warped or runout disc but wouldn't know how to tell. Just put it in for professional attention?

2) "Lubricate engine drive belts" -- I've never heard of this before! What would I lubricate them with?

3) "Replace missing OSF free wheeling hub cover -- lubricant starting to discharge." I thought the cover was just cosmetic, wouldn't something else be wrong if it's leaking lubricant?

4) "jack shaft locking but not free wheeling hubs" ... I guess I'd start by pulling the hubs apart, cleaning, lubricating and see how I go from there? (I confess I don't actually know how they work, which would help!!) The vehicle has apparently never been offroad (1 owner).

5) "repair severe oil leaks of power steering box -- needs removal and overhal to fully rectify" --- is that right? Couldn't I just put new seals in?

6 :) "Clear spare tyre of leaf matter" -- somehow I think this bloke is a bit pedantic!! (this was actually item 23!!)

Any hints where to get parts (new or wreckers) in western sydney/parammatta area would also be great.

First up you should clear away the leaf matter, this could be a real problem during the bush fire season.

Try a bit of soap on the belts ( as in a block ) just rub it on a few spots. But dont do this with the engine running. You can buy some spray on stuff.

3 & 4 sound like they would both be fixed by pulling apart and lubing.

Happy wheeling.
