ZF 4HP22EH to 24EH

Post by Slunnie »

Chatting to the gearbox man after unloading left arm, left leg and left testicle to pay for repairs, he was suggesting that if the tranny ever lets go to upgrade to the 4HP24 gearbox. The engine is a chipped/intercooled TD5 in a disco, and the 24 has a higher capacity rating.

I was saying to him that the probs are the 24 is 30mm longer due to the pump, and so there isn't a 24 bellhousing to suit the TD5 as the 24's came out with the 4.6V8 only. Also the mounting points on the chassis don't have enough slot to bring the mounts back by 30mm

His suggestion was to change the pump over to a 22 pump, so the factory bellhousing and chassis mounts are all correct, but then you have the setup of the 24 which are designed for the higher power output.

I know that the 24 has larger diameter fittings for the ATF cooler lines, but apart from that, does anybody know if this type of conversion is a possibility or why it wouldn't be a goer. I'm not doing this now, the box hopefully is good, but it may be a possibility for later or in other applications for other people.
Cheers

Hi,

we do this all the time,

you need to pick the right donor 4HP24, box code 1043 030 065 from the 4.6 P38 RR is ideal, build this with the TD5 box which will be either a 1043 010 766 or 1043 010 773, keep the TD5 bellhousing and torque converter, box ends up 15mm longer, not 30, oil cooler nipples go from 16 x 1.5 mm to 18 x 1.5mm,

we are also working on a mod which will allow you to use the larger diameter V8 4.0 P38 torque converter in the TD5 bellhousing, the smaller TD5 converter lock up clutch is prone to slipping on tuned engines.

Ah, thats interesting Dave. I'd be interested to hear how you go with the torque converter modifications, it sounds like a good one.

I was under the impression that the extra 30mm came from the pump and reflected in the bellhousing. Is it 15mm from the pump and bellhousing then and another 15mm in the body? I guess what I'm really asking, does the 24EH with the 22EH pump and bellhousing setup like you've described still sit in the factory TD5 Disco2 mounts???
Cheers

no, the pump body is + 15mm,

no point in fitting the 22 pump, the 24 stator in the pump housing is one of the uprated parts,

Hi Slunnie,

I knew you were going round in circles with this transmission drama,

Now I know why ;)
