That stupid pre-cleaner

Post by spannercrab »

Accidently broke the intake on my prefilter last night during an alternator swap, effectively disabling the filter, so the main filter is now the only one in the circuit.

Noticed a heap more power, EGT's are a lot lower than previously, EGT doesn't take as long to cool down after pulling under load / boost, faster to spool etc. Previously I was seeing some black smoke, which has disappeared now the filter has disappeared.

Filter was cleaned a couple of weeks ago (compressed air).

There has to be a way to increase the flow on these things - K&N don't make a direct replacement, but I found the E9267 (from a 2002 GU) might just fit with some sort of spacer ....

I know this topic has been covered before, but a quick search revealed nothing definitive.

Assuming that I *will* still be running a prefilter, is there any way of increasing the flow? Aftermarket replacement?

Just run some pipe from the guard where the snorkel comes in, to the airbox, and run paper filters - they work the best.

I've got foam filters for main and pre (before throwing precleaner box away)- both K&N, didnt do squat to mine so went back to paper.

Thnx bogged ... interesting to note that k&n's propoganda regarding higher flow rates may not be as practicable in the real world. That prefilter seems way too small for the job ....

Mine is a DX TD42 LWB and they never came out with a pre cleaner.
There is a dummy housing there, but it cannot be opened.
I have done 250k with no dramas, however I replace my snorkel ram with a donaldson cyclone type pre cleaner when I do big trips, or follow anyone in summer...
