I could almost guarantee it will be illegle on an airbag equipped vehical (without crash testing). Otherwise, if it complies with ARD's entirely (which many comercially available bars probably don't), it should be right!

well mein dont have and air bag * dont think its does*

im pretty sure you cant have any hooks or sharp edges etc

and you cant have a 4 poster you can only have 2 post in the middle and tube out the sides

there is a specific measurment or some thing that relates to that the top of the bar has to lean back this amount of has to be that far from the bonnet

im not sure there some info on this on 4wdmonthly forum

but basically when making it imagine what would happen if you hit some one where would they go

you want them to land on the bonnet and not go under but u dont want them to land half way up almosto n the windscreen

ill see if i can get a photo copy of the form out work got (we some times make alloy bullbars) it had a basic out line of whats good and bad

I made a bumper last week and tried to keep it legal. The shackle mounts are underneath, the bumper mounts the same as an ARB does on the Jeep along with most other aftermarket bars for the Jeep and the airbags shouldn't be afftected as the Jeep doesn't set them off based on impact but rather deceleration.

If I put a hoop on it I'll angle it back slightly to try and comply with the ADRS etc

Anyway, here's the pics of it.

The bar is 6mm angle, I scored the back to make it easier to bend, didn't cut all the way through, and then welded over the score. The recovery eyes are 12mm at the bottom and then brackets go up to 18mm thick. The brackets that bolt to the frame are 6mm thick and 50cm long and bolt on with 4 holes down each side and 2 on the fron tof each bracket, so a total of 12 bolts. It cost me less than $120 and took about 4 days.

I still need to add a skid to the bottom of it and may add a hoop to the top.

This is a steel bar I built in about 1993/94 for my GQ.
6mm steel for bumper section and 4.5mm wall pipe.







Bar was still on it when I traded the GQ in 1999

Steve, nice work mate , neat simple and clean. what is the depth of the angle in the front ? i was going to modify an arb bar i got for a slab for my winch but it may be easier to build something similar to yours, it would need to be approx. 5" deep to mount the winch to.

Mines only 3" deep and 5" tall in the centre section. If I was building a winch bar I'd just go with the deeper angle like you need and angle the sections in under the headlights sharper. I'd probably also sink the winch into it slightly, so step it down in the centre as well as run some box under the angle between the mounts. It'd still be simple to make and look pretty neat.

The anlge is 3" by 5", the section with the number plate mounted on it is 5" and the section with the spots mounted is 3".

Thats what i thought, that would be just the right size as the winch bolt holes are 4.5" x 10 ".
