hello,
what is the best engine for the conversion? i saw many people using the 5.0 v8, but it lacks power? and what about the 5.7 v8 fuel injected? i think its the best for the conversion,isnt?

I don't know why you would be rebuilding it. Most gen 3's are fine, if not a little noisy, and teflon coated pistons usually fix that.badger wrote:buy a 215 stroker motor or a 304 and stroke it if money aint a problem

A gen 3 will poop all over a stroker holden motor, although at higher revs. but horsepower for horsepower, will always win, even in regards to torque, will make more. A gen 3 is only $3000- $4000 dearer, so not a hell of a lot of difference, when money is not a big issue. Plus the gen 3 is heaps lighter, and that will help your front end weight a lot. they weigh similar to a V6 commodore motor, so are very light.

crushu is 100% right. 3 grand is nothing in a motor conversion and its benefits far exceed that. gen3 weigh 214kg, 6 bolt mains, different firing order to reduce crank stress by 12%, hollow cam etc to reduce recpiricating mass, eight coils to kill with water, huge power difference (mine jumps to attention), home tunable, easy to wire up, far mor efficient (20% better than 304), use platinum plugs, matching leads etc - longer lasting 1 spare only needed, can be run mafless. would i fit another YES but not an aussie one I would get an american import crate motor that hsa different headers (that i could use) and the rear drop sump.

Also, you could just buy a set of headers, and a sump, for a commodore motor. The US spec motors aren't built as well as the Aussie spec motors, and get noisy quicker.

good to know mate. I built my own headers, and got a camero sump for mine with the pickup lowered. no emmissions probs at all in qld as long as the motor is newer than the car (no one cares in qld)
why is the build quality worse in the us spec? I know the ls1's are very sensitive to piston/bore clearence and ned more attention to matching piston /bore

Seriously, is there anything that you do to a Gen 3 that will make it torquey down low..They have a reputation of being a very good motor with very good inner strength but nothing seems to happen until you turn up the wick. Considering that the conversion application is to retrofit a 4WD, torque is the desired outcome, especially down low. Would a stroked Holden have better torque figures in the idle to low revs where most people need it? I am aware that the Gen 6 litres are a different motor with more lower fiqures but I think the author might be looking at Gen 3.
The US motors are built sloppier, as they aren't fussed by the piston noise etc, as Aussied get all anxious over it, so the Holden engineers have requested certain changes to be made, mainly the coated pistons etc.
Torque down low can be tuned into any engine, things like bigger throttlebodies etc will have the opposite effect.
In a 4x4 application, why not gear to suit the rev range? Instead of 3.9's in a GQ, why not 4.1's? It sure as sh1t will sound better!!

mine has plenty torque can reverse outta my steepish drive with no throttle in high range running 4.6 gears. they have a lot more than i thought. gearing to 4.6 obviously increases the effective torque.

i would go to www.ls1.com.au as a great place to learn about the gen 3.
These motors are becoming very cheap (more so than holden 5.0 ) due to the massive amount of them.
ive seen complete motors for $2000 quite often these days( traveled around 80-110,000km and are usually motors ppl have removed for bigger and better things
these motors have proven to be very reliable and hard working and although i agree with some thoughts on the the low rpm power nothing like a small 224 sized cam ONLY upgrade would give the car around 260-270 rwkw with a huge amount of low end power n tq.
Once my motor shits itself in the GQ this is the process i will be taking up..

Definately. I've been keeping my eye on that forum for a while now. Its amazing the amount of cheap horsepower you can get for the ls1's (mafless tune, exhaust etc). Keep your eye out on ebay too as there are often crate motors and various forms of the ls1 going for $3500 to $5000 new. I believe some dealers even have some in stock and sell them with warranty for $5500. To the guys running the ls1's, especially in the comps have you ever considered running a dry sump setup from harrop or kec or does the standard sump cope fine with the offroad angles?
