60series weird grinding sound...

Post by vanzbrown »

Hi...

Have noticed since early this week that when im under load (under acceleration), and put it into 4th gear there is a weird sound, perhaps coming out of the gearbox. This continues into 5th, but none of the other gears. Take foot off the gas, and it goes, put it back on, back it comes. Hard to describe the sound... Kinda like like a loose wobbly knocking vibrating sound. Everything still runs, fine, just wanted to know if this sounds familiar, have had a bit of a search, but no luck...

Is your rear pinion seal leaking?

How are your rear uni's?

It could be, but don't quote me, the idler shaft in the transfer box. 60's have a habbit of wearing these out, and they aint cheap to replace. I'd suggest draining the oils out of the box and transfer and see how much metals in it. If it is in the transfer, I think Don Kyatt has a replacement kit at a reasonably good price.

should I swim it first ?

Cheers Guys,... Will check out the Transfer case on the weekend. Was going to do the engine oil/filters anyways...

Fixed Front/rear pinion seals about 6mths ago, Both diffs have had the oil replaced not so long back.

Tail shaft doesnt feel loose, but has about 1/2 turn movement(backlash?)

Listenening today, its does sound gearbox/transfer case. Was going about 100kms down a hill today, just rolling, it sounds normal, as soon as i press down on the accellerator, and the engine speed pics up, its starts banging again...

Appreciate the comments guys... Helps alot.

When the idler shaft bearing went in my 40 it was more of a whining sound than a grinding. Not sure about the actual idler shaft though.
