Doubts on Warn 8274 High Mount

Post by BJ40 3B »

Hi everyone...

I will probably buy this used Warn 8274 winch. the owner says it's a model from 2000.
The freespool handle is not original, and he says it was rebuilt by the distributor on 2003.
Is this an 8274 or an 8274-50??
Is the motor the 2.5HP or the 4.6HP version

is it a good idea to remove the top cover with the motor to see how the internals are? or they are less likely to be damaged?
What other things should i check?
What do you think of the overall condition by the photos?

Thanks all!

It looks older than 2000 but they are a tough winch. If it works then it is ok to buy. I think the motor is a 2.5hp.

The -50 IIRC has splined shaft wheras the standard is a keyed shaft (reading in one of the US mags today...), assuming the motors haven't been rewound.

Take the motor off and have a look, good to inspect it a bit inside too (oil color, gear codition, etc)

won't the serial number tell you when it was made?
Freespool handle is ummmm unique, if you buy it assume you are rebuilding it.
