sd33 oil pressure question

Post by zen »

oil pressure is really good, but since fitting a gauge, i have noticed that it takes a while before pressure is up from cold start..instant on second start of day etc..

how long does yours take on first start up??asking cos not sure if this is normal...

it could have been like this for years, as i have only recently fitted gauge..

cheers.

I had a similar problem on an older Valiant, the factory pressure light was electronic, so pretty instant when the engine was started as the sensor was on the side of the block, but the aftermarket kit had a line I had to plumb to the back of the gauge, this was alway's a little slower as overnight the oil in the line drained back to the block then in the morning i would have to wait for the line to fill (only a couple of secs.) before I got accurate gauge readings, I hope this helps

i wish it did..oil pressure light is telling the same story...

engine is very healthy though...but takes up to 15secs for oil pressure to appear(on first start up on tick over...and then its 40psi+ on tick over till its hot, where it sits at 20psi..40-50psi at 2000rpm..so pressure is good, once up..)

as stated this is on first start up..seems rather too long to me..(so have added cold start oil treatment, just in case)

Zen, it's your anti drain-back valve in the filter/s. Some brands are really bad for this esp Genuine on the td4.2 in my experience.

Consider trying a fleetguard or any other aftermarket filter that suits, every time it does it it will be the filter, the pump will need to fill the filter and gallery's before the gauge reads any back pressure from the bearings etc this can take a while.

cheers fnq
