I have a 99 4.2 turbo diesel GU & have a couple of issues with it at the moment . It seems whenever I start it up cold in the morning (or in the day for that matter) it blows a lot of diesel smoke. I know a lot of them do but mine seems to blow more than most . Also, it's reasonabley heavy on the juice too. This summer I had a problem with it heating up a couple of times & it used to want to run on when I turned it off if it was cold (though it hasn't done this for a while). Also, some days it seems to run a lot better than others & will pull hard. Others, it runs like a slug. Any ideas ???
Cheers
Joe

sounds like you could have a few dribbling injectors that would cause the black smoke at startup, if its white it will be a glowplug but from what u said it sounds like u need your injectors done.
When adjusting tappets, its very easy to adjust them too tight. This is due to the timing marks on the front pulley being hard to see and line up exactly with the pointer. Check your tappets again--preferably with a dial gauge to get TDC point correct then check tappets again. I have had problems with re-con Injectors not having the crack pressure set properly before. It COULD be a worn pump though........ Has any-one fiddled with the pump timing before?

Since I've had it, nobody has played with the pump at all & I'm guessing it's probably never been touched before hand . I purchased it with just under 200,000 & the injectors hadn't been changed either .
Sounds like you probably need to get injectors checked. B.J Diesel Injection Service-- Greens Rd Dandenong do a very good job, but might be a bit of a drive for you though.
