MQ Rev Counter

Hey all,

THE MQ patrol's rev counter doesnt work (hasnt been since we got it).

Anyhow, i was going to have a look at it today, so i started to take the dash apart, removed the plastic cover on all the gauges, and got all the screws removed. Now i expected the whole console bit to come away allowing me to (at least) see what wires run where behind there.


how do i get this out further so i can at least have a look, and what else could be stopping the rev counter from working correctly? Everything else works fine.

Specs (just incase) = MQ, 32" boggers (not sure whether spring or body lift has been done, but it kicks out of 4lo so im assuming body lift.)

Haven't done this for a while but from memory you have to fiddle around the back to unscrew the speedo cable.

yes, if its free but only comes out an inch then you need to disconnect your speedo cable off the back of it.

and you will need to disconnect the wiring looms to to pull it free....

for reference... if its a petrol motor.... then it should have power going to it from the instument panel somwhere.... and it should have i think an earth into a relay box...

the last wire goes through to the NEGATIVE side of your ignition coil...

so if u want to test it.... just disconnect it from the loom wires and run a cable to negative on coil, and a power to it and an earth and see if it works.... this will tell you if there is a break in the factory gear somwhere.
if it still doesnt work then the unit itself is shagged.

from what I recall, there is a resistor module plugged into a socket in the wiring loom near the radiator on the coil side. Vibration made the wire to the socket break and my speedo stopped working. I fixed the wire and taped the module to the loom to support it and was fine up until it fitted an electronic ignition module that was not campatible with the meter.

Screwy - it is a TD MQ, will this change anythign you have said?

G@Z - the speedo works fine, its just the rev counter that is rooster-eyed.

Had the same problem with mine was sd33t. It was sender unit on timing case cover. Try this first easier than taking dash apart

all of what i have said is irrelivent if its a diesel... diesels have a direct sender on the timing case.... check for continuity in the wiring to make sure its all connected... if it is then more then likely the sender.

Opps, I meant tacho, not speedo. And as you say it's a TD, then it will not have a coil so it will not have the resistor I'm crapping on about ;)

If ur pulling the instrument cluster out undo the screws, unclip the speedo unplug the connectors and it should come away.

My tacho didn't work and after changing the sender it still wouldn't go.

Took the instrument cluster out and then took out the tacho, turned out there was a track burnt out on the tacho's PCB, a bit of wire and some solder and all was sweet.

I would have a good look at any cheap fixes before replacing anything on the off chance!!
