when i put the gti in my zook i just cut a hole in the firewall
and made a alloy cover that bolted in the firewall and that
worked fine, plus i tiged up the standard thermostat cover
so it had a right angle insted of the standard gti one which
comes staight out the back of the block

Gday,

I am part-way through my gti conversion still trying to get all the parts. I decided to go for the mazda cap and rotor... the hardest part it trying to locate it!. However, in the end I put a post on the ford laser forums, and within half a day a guy was offereing me a choice of brand new or second hand caps from the 323 gtx. You need to shave the inside of the cap to fit it to the suzuki (hitachi) dizzy, and also get the dizzy shaft modified so the rotor button will fit. Details of this are on www.xfactor.net

good luck

I was told that if you start cutting into the firewall of any vehicle it raises engineering issues... is the correct?

i also boxed the fire wall and reduced the diameter of the heater fan to suit. worked fine. the easier option to the thermostat housing is to get one off an early 1.3 swift also badged of the mb barina. this is at right angles and fits fine. all you have to do is block the old fan switch. and considering all the wiring is there i used the thermo, just bought a cheapy from supercheap- no probs! -less load on engine and you can pull a fuse for the deep water.

First i heard that a mk1 Swift had a right angle themostat..
But what's got me is that even if it was is no one ever mentioned that the g13a and g13ba heads where different. I know my themostat will not fit a dohc head.

Still Sierra heads and swift heads are different so maybe there is hope.

Be great to get a photo of a themostat from a gti next to a right angle part number 'x' from model 'y' year humber 'z' identical no modding required :)
