Stock Lux 5spd OK behind 304 inj. V8 GMH?
Mate of mine is putting a 304 injected Holden V8 into a Hilux. It has a 5 speed ATM (G52?). Will it be able to handle the new motor?
74 FJ40, 307, Hilux DBC, 35 Claws, welded rear.

I have a commy 5.0lt efi motor in my 4runner with a w56 toyota 5-speed. I have 4.88 diff ratio's 37's and dual cases.
I have had it in for about 1.5 years. No problems so far. BUT I do not do 4-wheel burn outs on the road, I drive sensibly on the road, the suspension is to soft to do anything else. I do give it sh&t off-road when needed. But I prefer to crawl then hammer it. Be there done that
I believe you can trash anything with enough right foot. I did my t350 gearbox when I had a 253 in the runner.
If it does go I will be looking at a r-series supra box or a marks heavy duty box. But I have alot of other tings that are needed.
Chris.

Yeah it will be OK as long as you dont dump the clutch and hit second gear hard. The front bearing in these box's is the main drama, it wears a little then the main shaft and lay shaft can seperate slightly and all of a sudden 1st and 2nd gear dont mesh properly anymore and you will strip one of them. The next prob is 5th gear because it hangs off the rear of the box with either a circlip or a nut (depending on what model) and that is prone to walking off the end of the shaft if tjhe gearbox is flogged in top gear.
As Chris said his has been copeing well and as long as you dont abuse the new found power it will be fine. Aloso i would go Auto long before i ever went to a Marks Heavy Duty 5spd they are just too expensive for what they are.

I flogged out the bearings in my lux in 200000 ks with just the shitty ol gutless 2.8 diesel turning it.
Fifth gear started making a bit of noise then a couple of weeks later they all did.
When we pulled the box apart one bearing came out in bits!!!
So I would say if you are going to be running a fair bit of power maybe a different box would be better if you want reliabilty.

This is correct for the w series supra box's that come in the earlier model supra's. But the R series boxes that come behind the latter model twin turbo jobs are a much bigger box. These boxes are similar to the turbo box's that where avaiable in the US in some hiluxes (R151F) Or a V6 hilux box - R150F.
These are stronger but are 23 spline so you would either have to a later model chain t/case or get a marlin adapter or 23 spline t/case (again from marlin).
have a look at John's site http://members.iinet.net.au/~ozrunner/ProjectsIndex.html
He has put a R154 into his 4runner behind a HO 5.0lt. The only problem is the relatively higher 1st gear (3.25). The turbo box R151F has a lower first gear of 4.31. You can even get a lower first gear from marlin (5.15). Check out http://www.marlincrawler.com
