TB42 EFI Distributor failed, replacement options?

I've just bought a 1997 Y60 with the 4.2 Petrol EFI TB42 engine. Was working brilliantly when I collected it from owner in the UK, but driving back down through France, and some 400miles from home, engine suddenly cut out with orange warning light on. Stopped by the side of the motorway but was not in a very safe place as it was raining buckets. I got it going again, but very lumpy - mis-firing both at idle and on revving - and the engine warning light was still on. Strangely, the rev counter either registered a normal idle or 4000 rpm, nothing in between. Anyway, I managed to move off the road before it cut out again. Got a tow off the motorway and to Nissan dealer but it was Sunday so no possibility of getting it looked at.
To cut a long story short, I got home using my insurance but the car is still some 400 miles away and not going anywhere!
The dealer said that initially the engine started with no problem, but once it warmed up it cut out again. Their computer came back with a diagnostic failure code for a sensor in the distributor. The sensor is not sold separately (surprise) and so I need a new distributor at $$$$$!
I wouldn't mind so much, but they can't tell me when they might be able to get the part.

So, my questions to the forum:

1) I need Nissan part number 22100-37J10 ... can anyone help?
2) Is there another option - I've read on here about converting points distributors to electronic ... might this be an option?
3) Is there a way to bypass or otherwise fudge the sensor which might get me back on the road?

maybe you just need to install ( find) a compatible sensor and fab it up to suit? skylines may be a place to start.
