richening up the ol 2H & 10% petrol trick.
Hey guys, just though I would ask a question, I was thinking of richening up the injector pump on my ol 2H.
It doesnt really blow any substantial black smoke even when its working hard.
I was thinking about the 10% PULP trick but from what I read thats designed to help the normally unburnt diesel burn, in which case if im running a bit lean, is pointless.
How hard is it to richen it up a little? or is this a professionals only kinda job?
Also I have discussed upgrading to 35" tyres but the engine has done 400k, and i was advised against it due to lack of power and stress on the old motor, out of interest on the weekend i was towing my dirt bike on a 6x4 trailer and I could hold 115kms on the FLAT highway with my 33's.
If I can richen it up a bit, try the pulp trick, whats ya thoughts on going up to the 35's?
Or even for that matter, if I can hold 115kms on 33's, do you think the engine is to tired for 35's without any richeing or pulp.
Cheers

I am going to give the PULP a shot on the weekend, ive also read how to increase the diesel supply from some older posts on here, so I will do that as well.
Can you hold 115kms on flat blacktop with your 33's? or do you struggle to hold that kind of speed? Sure it took a little winding up haha, going up reasonable highway hills im usually down to about 80ish lol.
Im still keen on trying 35's and its only a weekend basher anyway. Its not like I use it every day. And with the PULP trick it might just give me enough to spin up the 35's.

my hj60 with 33's has no problem doing 120 on the flat sections and as long as your doing 120 it holds well going up hills, if you try to hit a hill at 100 you will find yourself shifiting 4th though.
Well
I got my volume screw adjusted, its got a lot more go now, I can especially notice how much it continues to accelerate after 80kph, it used to really die in the arse after 80kph and take some winding up, now it seems to continue to power on.
I cant tell how much smoke it is blowing because its dark, but I adjusted the volume screw 1 complete turn counter clockwise (in half turn increments), not sure if thats a lot or not, perhaps someone can advise me on that?
I might try turning it another half a turn on the weekend when I can see how much smoke its producing, then after that I will try the PULP trick and see how it goes.

I am not sure what speed it would hold on the highway, I like to keep it to about 90 anyway, as over that speed it uses too much fuel.

I tried it on the weekend, I dont think I went the full 10% PULP, could not tell because the tank was not empty, maybe had still 10 or 20 litres in it, but I put 50l of diesel in and 5l of PULP, it ran fine on and offroad, a slight temp increase, but still well below half way. I really cannot give you an acurate guide of the increase because I also turned up the volume screw 1 turn, which in itself made a big differance, but to give you an example, on a decent hill on the highway that I used to fall back to about 75kms, (and almost considering going back down to 3rd. Its a 5 speed) I was able to maintain a steady 105kms all the way up. To me, thats an awesome increase. This has made up my mine on the decision to go for 35's haha, well the power and the fact my 33's were not enough yesterday.pridhac wrote:I do admit to being tempted by the 10% PULP idea though.
What say you try it and let me know how you go?

Calvin, its hard to say, mine was running like a dog, I would say the previous owner had the volume screw set lean for fuel economy, mine never blew any black smoke, not ever, if your blowing a little black smoke, give the 10% PULP a go, even if you only have half a tank and mix 10% into that, and give it a go for half a tank its worth a shot. I definatly did not find any negative results. My mate who usually wheels with me as navigator rekons the engine sounded to be running a lot smoother, he also could not believe the power increase. Most black top places I could get up atleast 1 gear higher then normal.
Hope this helps, once I run this tank out I will try with just diesel again and see if I can notice a loss.

you could be cooking your pistons though :SQIKAZZ wrote:Calvin, its hard to say, mine was running like a dog, I would say the previous owner had the volume screw set lean for fuel economy, mine never blew any black smoke, not ever, if your blowing a little black smoke, give the 10% PULP a go, even if you only have half a tank and mix 10% into that, and give it a go for half a tank its worth a shot. Do you think so? I imagine I was running about 8% PULP. I had very minimal temp increase, but that was due to the volume screw adjustment, because I ran around for about half an hour before I put the PULP in and noticed the temp rise then. When I say rise I mean like about 1 needle width higher, and that was only when it was working, and still not even at the halfway mark, surly if it were to start melting pistons, the block would heat up also and then it would intern effect the temp gauge? Im no mechanic so I could be wrong, but I am reasonably mechanically minded.Shadow wrote:

What engine do you have?Sweeney wrote: Does anyone have photos\pictures to show the volume\mixture screw?

Gday QIKAZZ,
its good to read up on the things your are trying in the way of sourcing more horse power. I just wanted to comment on what Shadow said as this is something you should keep in mind. Winding the rack out and upping the air screw on a diesel is something we used to do when we were racing scrapers up north ( well the fitters for a carton
) and Jezz some of them used to haul- leaving exhaust red at the base and a touch of flame coming out the stack at night
.
But i have also seen what happens when it is not done correctly, and let me say melting pistons tops will be a very costly affair. It would be really good to know what inturnal temps your piston tops are running at, and if they are getting slightly to high you may have to back the fuel of slightly.

Daniels

Im fairly sure I have not adjusted the volume screw to much, because I am still not blowing anywhere near as much black smoke as I have seen many other diesels blowing, it only blows black smoke when its under load, not all the time, as for the PULP in the diesel, well I will run without it as well and see if I get much power loss. Then I will weight up the pros and cons, this 4wd is only a weekend basher, sometimes it doesnt get driven for a month, so its not like its essential and I obviously have other vehicles for my day to day travels. But on the other hand I would like to get a few more years out of it yet.
Thanks for the info.
