hi,
just looking for info on the ZD30 motor. i just got an almost new navarra. just trying to find a bit more info about it.
is it worth blocking the EGR on it? i saw a few posts about having EGR valve problems.
is that a dual stage inlet manifold on it?
also why is the boost sensor connected to the turbo not the inlet manifold ??
any links to any other info ie exploded diagrams, manafactires repair manuals etc.
cheers.

ZD30 motor info
I have a ZD30 in a patrol... see the signature block.
Gregory's do a service manual - priced a lot better than the Nissan one -and it has a few good bits of info like fault codes and how to retrieve them. The rest of the book would be next to useless, and it doesn't go into too much depth on stuff like fuel pump (Bosch), but it is pretty good generally. Take a look at one at an auto shop and see if it's worth it for you.
As for the EGR valve, I was told to block it by the Nissan dealer (service dept.) - fault finding purposes really. I'm not happy with the ZD30, but saying that, I haven't heard too many things about the Navara - I believe it is the same motor, just chipped and tuned differently... so maybe the after market manual may lead you astray? I can't tell you for sure. Nissan also spend a lot more than me on R&D, so they know what makes it go hard (pity they can't make it tough too!). Talk to your dealer, scratch that, talk to your service dept. If they're any good they'll tell you straight. If they piss in your pocket try they guys at Nepean (Penrith NSW).
Hope you find some of this usefull... I'm looking at replacing my ZD30 with a V8 diesel... but otherwise, I love my Datsun and won't stray, pity they used a European based engine...

well i just found the transfer case oil bung was loose and leaking oil. i don't think they are going to be doing the servicing again.manno74 wrote:

i don't think they are European based but they are made to sell in europe and USA, i think the motors, exspecially the 2.5 turbo, is used in a few european cars.
the ZD30 is the engine used in the Ford Transit in europe (one reason why they have the engine heat switch - euro temps!). Apparently they thought it could be a good engine for a 4wd in Oz... Apparently not!! Good for clean, cold-air auto-bahns.
Never thought I'd be bashing the Datsun, but having owned the 3.0L for 5yrs now, I think I'm qualified to gripe. Don't get me wrong, the Datsun is fine, it's just the damn donk!
Not good to hear about the lack of service in your servicing - stick to doing your own, you'll learn alot more too. But like I said before, I haven't heard too many bad reports on ZD30's fitted to Navara's - maybe the different spec on the chip/confuzer works better. The only other tip I have is to chase the faults yourself too - if the engine light comes on, retrieve the fault and then eliminate the faults one by one (like blocking the EGR valve). Most importantly, don't go straight to Nissan when the airflow meter faults - they can charge up to $1000 per sensor, when an element can be changed much cheaper.
