Cracked rear axle housings have been known to happen with overloaded coil sprung Gen 2 models.
Either high speed jumping or regular heavy load carrying on corrugated roads has been known to do it.
Ralliart here in Melbourne used to have custom made gussets that were welded in place on the top off the axle housing adjoining the pumpkin for extra strengthening.
The only one I know of was Lloyd Swartz in the US (swb Gen 1 3.0 V6)had this happen on the Rubicon Trail and they did a trail fix with a portable welder but his car has seen many, many years of abuse.
Yea happend to me once, ended up breaking axle when the housing broke, heaps of problems getting the car out of the bush, as the diff housing was sitting on the ground
