What type of diff lock should I fit in the front of the 80?
any coments? I'm leaving the rear as is for now but will fitting air locker latter.
current truck, 105 series GXL diesel 6" springs & twin pro lockers
sierra LWB spoa one wide track diffs twin locked

If you are buying an airlocker for the rear, you might as well save up for one in the front.

The problem i have seen with autolockers, especially in the front of a vehicle, they can have unpredicatable unlocking characteristics. They will lock under acceleration, and unlock under deceleration. When you are offroad, it will sometimes stay engaged whilst you are trying to turn, which isn't much fun.

If you have a full time 4wd 80, i reckon it would be a pig in the front with an autolocker. A welded front is not an option, unless you can unlock the hubs.

I have a front air locker in mine it is good to be able to lock and unlock it when I want too.

Plus to have an auto locker in the front of a full time would be a pig to drive i think.

air locker only
never ever anything else in the front
especially in a 80 (makes front diffs stronger)
and especially even more in a full time 80 (be like driving a fwd car with a locker on the road)

my 80's got a part time kit fitted so it wont make a difrence on road whats wrong with a lock right?

would you buy road tyres for driving in mud because they were cheaper??? don't think so. i'd hate to have to turn slow and sharp when a lockrite wont disengage.

As far as a locker goes, they work. In certain off road situations though, the ability to be able to disengage a locker is a great benefit. Turning sharp corners with a front locker engaged not only stresses your CV's out, it also makes your car a hell of a lot more unmanouverable. Trying to turn with a locker engaged is like having no powersteering, not to mention the car will not turn in a tight circle. Under these circumstances, autolockers can be unpredictable.

If you are driving on the sand, you will find the front locker will pretty much stay engaged all the time, which can be very annoying. It will reduce your ability to steer the car on loose surfaces.

Lock rights are ok in mud... just mud!

Go the air locker so you don't have to comprimise in any situation. Turn it on and off at will not when it wants to.
People who love lockrites usually haven't experienced and air locker. If you go from an open to a lockrite then you'll think it's good. If you go from open/lsd to air locker you'll think it's awsome. It opens a whole new world.. Do it once, do it well!

Air locker all they way. As said before it makes the front diff in a 80 stronger. You also have the ability to turn it on/off.

sounds like Im getting air lokkers, one to start of with will get a second one when I have more funds
Now should I get a front or rear lockker first and what brand anyone used a TJM one yet think there called a pro lockker.

front

makes diff stronger and you should have an lsd in the rear (altho yota spec)

it does depend on what sort of terain you wish to drive too. beach andmud .........rear, rocks front

mmmm after having an MK with air locker rear and detroit front and then a maverick with twin air lockers, when I did the 80 i put electric rear and detroit in the front. Now I can understand in comps you may want to disengage in situations, but I can tell you the detroit never failed in the MK Patrol and has done excellent on the 80 seriesl. IN fact I was talking to another guy from this forum regarding this subjectg and his hilux has a lock-right and has yet to break a cv and does a lot of driving in ormeau here in Brisbane, yet a mate of his with an air locker has broken so many he can't keep count. Not to mention the amount of air lockers that have been pulled out a repaired in the club due to air leaks, and they were brand new lockers. I like the fact the detroit has give in it. I would put a pro-locker in before an air locker. The detroit was about $1300 and is a proven centre, but each to his own. From what i have seen I have no confidence in an air locker and it has no give.

I had lock rights in my first cruiser and it was fine but would let go under very heavy loads, and when i was trying to get up a sand hill one day after the lock right let go a few times i noticed my free wheeling hub went rolling past me.
my next cruiser just had a lock right in the rear and was perfect and never let go once untill i overtook a car 100+ and blew a rear tyre after that it was stuffed, so i put in toyota cable lockers in F+R from a import and they were great and worked really well but you need to grease the linkages from time to time as they will seize up if not used for some time.
Only one air locker out of all the people that i know that have them has a air leak but it was only from a diff housing swap and some one didn't undo the air line to the diff centre right and when it was put together it leaked air from inside somewhere.
I also had a cig locker (worked great too) but i had to get out and unlock one of my free wheeling hubs to turn a corner on anything but sand ( even in 2 wheel drive).

I run air locker front & rear in my lux and it's great no dramas with air leaks so far and they were fitted a long time before i owned it however i did break a profeild cv while running 35 and a heap or right foot (hopefuly getting some longfiels in soon) . A mate of mine was running f & r air locks broke like 11 cv's (2 of them profield and 2 new stand 1"s) cracked the sh*t and fitted a lockright in the front and set of longfield cv's had no real problem however the other day was reversing out of a rock section @ riply and done a rhf axle so now i'm looking @ 30 spline set of longs and will be keeping my air lock in the front he said to me some time before he broke his axle that he kind of still wished he had his air lock in the front didn't give me a reason tho. Keep in mind my mate runs dual transfers turbo 2.8 35's and always plenty of right foot. So its all how you wanna drive it and with a lockright in a full time 4wd you'd have 2 think it'd be a bitch on the road.

Go the front airlocker.

more often its a front wheel lifting that stops your momentum, or a front wheel that gets caught on a big rock, ledge, log, whatever. If your fronts can grip and grab they should pull your rear up (with assist from lsd).

if you can't afford the rear aswell, look into getting the lsd tightened with shims.

prolockers read good - no seals, etc. They're obviously based upon the ARB airlocker and improved(??) I've never seen or heard of one in action though so can't comment. I can tell you though that the air locker in the front of my GQ rocks!!!

True, no locker has give in a locked position. Now I am only talking about detroit here as I have never really liked the lock right, but I have not had one either.. The detroit allows differential action when cornering. I nearly always had the air locker off so I didn't break a front axle when cornering. On and off the button all the time gave me the shits. I am getting lazy too. Sure i know people that have had no problems with air leaks, but when 4 or so cars, including mine had the same thing I couldn't bring myself to spend the money there. I can assure I have had the wheel about 2 feet in the air with drive to the wheel on the ground, so it works. Of course I am not saying I will never break a cv, but i still think i am less likely in a detroit as most time a cv is broken on a full or part lock when the balls of the cv are out on the end of the CV bell. With an air on there is no give here. A detroit has give, but is locking and unlocking so I guess it depends what you are looking for.

However if i break a cv i will tell no-one and get the longfields put in just so I can say i am right (HA HA) :lol:

ps be assured i will break a cv at some point.
