holden 308 vs ford efi 5lv8
hello, the truck i'm aquiring has a holden 308 motor in it atached to a 60 series 5spd is it worth pulling this motor out in favour of a 5l efi v8 out of a 94 fairlane.
the power specs are 308=160/400 ford=165/388
alltho the ford produces it's power lower in the rev's and efi is better of road in all ways isn't it.
plus wich is easy'er to tune up?
thanks

So would I ..... because "IF" were a phord owner I'd be a little concerned that the 308's power was so close to the efi pos phord'sCRUSHU wrote:I'm interested to know where you got your power figures from.
Add to that the question of which holden 308 is it .... red , blue , black, or what ????
My next question would be why bother re-converting it.......
If it aint broke then why "fix" it
plords and plord owners never make any sense

I'm tipping it is a early holden power figure, taken on a engine dyno, without any ancillaries. Whereas Ford figures, from 1976 onward, were on engine dyno's with all accessories, exhaust, air fiter etc.

The current crop are but red n blue blocks had the "non turbo" pattern where the chev block is the turbo patternmule75 wrote:is a 308 the same bolt pattern and engine mounts as a small block chev?
The pattern name "turbo" came for the gearbox behind the motor .....
example:
the turbo 350 and turbo 400 automatic gearboxes bolted up to the chev engines from factory, so the bolt pattern was nicknamed the "turbo pattern"
In Aust the Holdens bolted up to a trimatic auto gearbox so the pattern was known as the Tri pattern.
As chevs became more popular here the name of the tri pattern changed so it was either a narrow or wide pattern block.
In more recent times & with the advent of the 308efi engines and the newer chev based engines we're now using in our holdens we've become accustomed to calling em turbo patterns again.... much for the same reasons we had way back except its now a turbo700 auto instead of the highly trusted solid as a rock turbo400
Generaly tho the
red motors were all tri pattern
blue motors were largely tri pattern ( beginning of the change over )
Black motors were a mix or both
efi motors were all turbo pattern
It all depends on which era you were brought up in I guess .... for me its either a wide or narrow block

so they are very rough estimates.known 2 wrote:the power figure are out of an old 4wd monthly and the 308 is a red motor
and the ford is in base spec form
In your position, I would run VN efi on the motor you have, or keep the 308, just because it is there. But the EFI Ford will make more power than the carby 308.

A speed camera would have prevented that!
The Tri pattern was also known as the Trau pattern...as in Traumatic.V8Patrol wrote:mule75 wrote:is a 308 the same bolt pattern and engine mounts as a small block chev?

The early ones were known to fail and taxi drivers reportedly converted some taxi's back to the Powerglide. The good ol' 2 speed. Killer box.

A lot of work to convert an existing V8 for another. How about stroking the 308 to 355 that's if a red motor can be stroked? If possible, then you will get very good torque with all the mods being on the inside.CRUSHU wrote:so they are very rough estimates.known 2 wrote:the power figure are out of an old 4wd monthly and the 308 is a red motor

ps the efi holden motor is a 304 not a 308
also i think you will find those figures are a bit inaccurate as if i remember correctly the ford v8 made 158 (eb falcon) and the 304 made 165(vn/p) and the 304 has alot more power than the 308. the v6 (127 vn/p) actually made more kw than the 308 standard.
