New Hilux mod tips please...

All you guys who have aftermarket rims, did you have trouble finding wheels? I keep getting told that because the new Hilux has a strange offset (+30mm or something!) there isnt a huge choice. I keep seeing wheels on 97 -05 models and think they would be nice on my 06 but the offset was -15 or something so now nothing fits!!!! Any tips on wheel manufacturers?
Thanks
Troy

I know what you mean, I had a real hard time finding new rims for my Hilux, ended up with ROH, the other available was by CSA so give them a go.Troyota wrote:All you guys who have aftermarket rims, did you have trouble finding wheels? 24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think not.

Cheers

Yeah, you just have to get used to that dont you? Mine gets a normal wash every other weekend (if there has been no off-road) but once a month is a "Wheels Off" clean. Have to allow a day for this. Not too bad in summer, wash the truck & have a beer, but not too much fun in winter! How long does it take you guys to clean the Lux?HLX40L wrote:I'm careful, and don't mind spending hours cleaningTYLER wrote:y the hell u takein that off road? looks to good to take off the tar!

I know what you mean about Winter (COLD), on a nice summers day with out water restriction, i could spend the best part of all day washing, clean, painting what ever the truck needs, the way I see it is we have spent big bucks on these Hilux so why not keep them in good nick.Yeah, you just have to get used to that dont you? Wouldn't we all... Takes me at least an hour to get anywhere near some decent offroad areas....HLX40L wrote:I'd love living close to a great 4x4 spot like thatTroyota wrote:Water restrictions Suck! Hmm... well I found out the new IFS in the 05/06 Hilux isn't so great.
A shock snapped at the base, I can see a real weak point in these things. I will be looking at making them stronger I be thinking.
It has also caused the shock to be half warn from rubbing on the axle and the rubber cv boot has perished at the end causing grease to go everywhere.
It's not just the type of shock I use, my standard shocks have the same weakness.
Oh and don't attempt to drive slowly over small curbs :(
This is the drivers side that snapped:
This is the passenger side, all looks good still *fingers crossed*
Oh before anyone asks, the gold stuff everywhere is my rust proofing.

with the prado 120 (similar setup) a few manufacturers had issues like it appears blue max is having.
it's probabaly a one of manufacturing defect on that one shock, but I wouldn't be comfortable replacing them with the same again.
i'd throw a ome or a bilstein under it.
i'll sell you my ome struts dave? i'll put bilsteins in mine when i get it to melbourne in august for the sliders and twin airlocker install.
also what happened to your bullbar? they didnt paint the plastic between the headlight and bar?

Quality.......I'm with you on that Brother!ats4x4dotcom wrote:Seems Blue Max have had an issue with this, which sounds wierd, given no one else has had this problem, though it can happen I guess, being mass produced, but personally, I would go for quality, and value for money, vs sticker price when buying suspension.

Yeah I just think it was a dodgy shock, I'll give em another go but I'll never be comfortable again, I'll be keen on grabbing your OME ones when you go bilstein tho, then eventually I'll be going for a coil sprung sas conversion.
The bullbar inserts have come in, just need to move the bar out to swap them over which will happen this week (they didn't apply any primer to the inserts when they painted them)
It's all covered under warranty and the bluemax stockist is being great about it, picking the car up, fixing it all etc.
I tell ya what tho, they're real dodgy trying to get the spring in the front, you need some very small spring compressors as mine didn't fit because of crap being in the way and yes, you DO need spring compressors to get them back together.
My opinion is it can happen to any shock really, it can't be isolated to one manufacturer, it just appears to be a dodgy weld that may have caused it to break.
My tip to anyone touring with these vehicles, take a spare shock, lower axle boot and a spring compressor as it really could happen to any of em.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that I am building a new site called www.newhilux.net which will launch soon, it will allow everyone to add their hilux to the profile list so you can attach all the details and photos relating to your car, allows you to store the images on the server for other sites such as here as well.
Stay tuned
