GQ Auto to Manual - cost and level of effort

Post by mortaygo »

I have a GQ TI 4.2D (aftermarket turbo) with a factory Auto. I am considering doing a conversion to manual. Can anyone give me an indication of what the cost and level of effort (including problems with doing this). Do I require an engineers certificate and how/where to I get one of these? I am in Brisbane

hi,

why woudl you wanto go backwards? If its because you are having problems with the auto then i understand.

teh main problem is the weight of teh transmissions when doing the changeover.
other than that, you have the pedal set, clutch master and slave ( booster is reccomended also), the line, the floorplate and boot, clutch, flywheel and then take the transmission fault light out of the dash ( bulb only)

its not to hard if you have all the parts required.

How much for the Auto and all its bits and pieces, or may be interested in a swap yours for mine.

How much it will cost will depend on if you do it yourself or pay for someone to do it for you. Doing it your self would cost you just the cost of the bits about $1500 to $2500, big cost range due to the how good the bits you buy. You would pay someone a full day to fit at a workshop could go upto $1000 or more.

I've done auto to manual mods quite a few times now and I can guarantee it's never anywhere near as easy as it first looks.

You will face lots of niggling little differences in wiring, vacuum hoses etc etc.

In the end, it's not really that hard, but it is gonna be quite an expensive swap buying all those little bits and pieces.

Maybe you and troy can do a swap?

Gearbox swap

Post by stevepet »

Just done same thing myself.

Costs were
Gearbox $500.00
Clutch kit $650.00
Spigot bush $10.00
Flywheel $45.00
Clutch master cylinder $135.00 second hand boosted
clutch slave cylinder $55.00
Clutch line $55.00
pedals $50.00
Transmission tunnel cover $40.00
plus sundry grease oil etc
You have to bridge the netral safety swith up near the fuses in engine bay and determine which wires are for the reverse light from the switch bolted onto the side of the auto gearbox and then cut the rest off.
I still had transfer case on the gearbox i bought so I didn,t use the one of the auto box they are supposed to be the same but I noticed the one in the auto had an extra sensor near the switch for 2wd/4wd mode. Maybe you could leave it in .
By far the biggest part is labour this is a damn heavy box you will be best off having someone to help you. I used a transmission hoist and it actually buckled the hoist. I did all the labour myself but I wouldn't think the labour would be cheap. If you do it yoursel allow a good day to do it. Remember to mark all driveshaft to pinion flanges so driveshafts can be put back in same position.
When buying second hand parts diesel and petrol master cylinders, flywheel and bellhousings are different.

Good Luck

Auto to manual

Post by mortaygo »

well sounds like an expensive effort as I am not very mechinically minded! Does anyone know if there is a fix for the overdrive coming in too early. I understand the VL Commodores had the same problem. I feel that with the power button depressed, it is revving too hard over 70ks, however over drive kicks in at 60 so it keeps dropping back and forth. I have never owned an Auto so it is a bit annoying.
