FJ40 Hard Top Issues...

Post by MrForty »

I've just replaced the guttering around the roof of my 40 and now it's time to put the roof back on. But, there was a rubber seal between the old metal guttering and where it sits on the body. This rubber seal has perished and I need to replace it. Does anyone have any idea where I can get one or an idea on how to stop the leaks and get by with out it? I hope this makes sence :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks a lot

im not sure what the rubber seal ur talkking about looks like but if it goes between 2 flat surfaces about 20mm wide im sure you could get a some foam tape about that width and use it to replace the rubber

clark rubber sells the stuff there a little expensive but the stuff comes in widths from about 15mm to 35mm maybe even narrower or wider and the thickness can be any thing from 3mm to 15mm

if you do go this option try and find some that has a yellow backing on the sticky side possibly made by a company called "tesa" its good stuff

so im sure there should be a type that would suit your needs and once the stuff has been applied and had time to get a good adhesion (sp?) the stuff doesnt come off easilly usually breaks up when you try to remove it

don kyatt spares would sell the rubber as they do replacement parts for toyotas
if you want a sealant use sikka flex as standard silicone will cause rust

and i think with the foam idea it may allow water/rain to seep threw especially in hard rain and at top speed

put silicon on the edge that you want the seal to be on then cover the silicon with glad wrap so that it doesnt stick to surface you dont want it to stick to. then put the hard top back on and leave it on untill the silicon has dried then take the hard top off and remove the glad wrap and the silicon will have molded to shape that you need it to be and you can trim the excess silicon off. hope this helps you.

Unfournately nobody manafactured these seals apart from toyota. And unless u are prepared to give a major organ and the deeds to your house toyota probably cant help either. Ive got a ute but for the roof seal u can purchase 3mm by 50mm insersion rubber and a set 0f wad punches and make your roof seal for the windscreen seal use channel rubber and glue the lot together using loctite401 i done this on my ute and it dosent leak a drop. And before u think im a diy man i have manafactured coaches, ambulances, firetrucks and truck bodies so i know my stuff.
