HILUX 2.8 REBUILD?

Post by BadLux »

Arrghh I've got a moral delima!! I'm planning on going overseas at the end of the year so put the lux on the market, had quite alot of interest but when they did an RAC check on it they said the motor has shagged piston rings. Causing blow by, and putting to much compression in the crankcase, which is causing it to leak out the front crank case seal, which in turn is causing the timing belt to become oily and so on so forth.

They've said the only way to fix this is by doing an engine rebuild. Money I do not want to spend but at the same time I can't sell the car knowing the motors shagged. So I've decided to get an engine rebuild. Yes all I can see is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$

I asked my mechanic jim in balcatta what the sorta prices would be and he said between $1,500 and $2,500. I'm still not sure what sorta rebuild this entails but I can see it hitting $3k+

Has any1 rebuilt there 3l ( 2.8 ) hilux motor?? Where did you get it done? What sort of $$$ did it cost you and what other options did you look at?

I've looked at the 3.8 v6 conversion but thats like $7-8k and don't wanna spend that kinda money! plus fuel is too god damn expensive for that!!

Any opinions experiences would be appreciated.

Cheers

Oh and the motor is an 89 model,

Done 272,000k's

Been serviced every 5,000k's without fail (these motors are known for shitting themselves if not changed every 5,000k's)

Injector pump has been rebuilt in 2000

Has a safari turbo system running 8psi

Why is it that when you decide to sell your pride of joy you find out it's FARKED!!! I had absolutely no problem with them getting an RAC check because I thought it would pass with flying colours, OBVIOUSLY NOT!

Hi there badlux, I'm very surprised its stuffed, especailly if you have serviced it as you said. Myn has 286 on it now still going strong. Do you use any oil between changes, myn doesnt, is there any traces of blue smoke when driving with some one you know behind you. I do my oil and filter every 4k and have so since new, Im getting a bit worried now as I have myn booked in to get a turbo fitted which will also be running 8p boost by turbo glide in woolongong. Please email me tommorrow on millers1@fortdodge.com.au to remind me and I will email you back with a kit that is available for the 2.8D was only like $400 I hant got the details here on my home computer only at work. The guy who owned my lux before me, had it rebuilt completely about 8 years ago. When i bought it, it had 300K on the clock, he told me the rebuild was at about 250K. When i ended up going through the mountain of receipts that came with the lux, i found one for the rebuild. Done by Queanbeyan Diesel Service and costing a whopping $6700  i dont why he paid that much, but it was completely rebuilt. I would have bought a 2nd hand 2.8 and whacked on a hair dryer if that was me, but anyways......why dont u just ring around a few places and ask what they charge.

It's not uncommon to hear ppl paying out $5k to rebuild their 3L- whether they are exaggerating or being ripped off who knows.

The other option is to whack in a 5L plenty of them around. You need to change over the sump pan and exhaust manifold, get the pre 2000 model as they have mechanical pump like the 3L the later model (5LE I think is the code) they have the electronic pump. I would not be paying 5K to rebuild a 3L when the 5L is a better motor didnt have the bearing problem that the 3L had. Will be getting myn checked out now before I spend 3k on a turbo. mate has a 99 model with 5L and it is efi so anything efi and deisel run a mile just to many problems efi causes enough dramas in cars let alone 4wd's ad the extra dust water and vibration that it will come into contact with and i think you will be poor and bald very fast from the stress.
plenty of parts on the bench

fark the rebuild its waist of money and time. Get hold of a good second hand 3L and put it in yourself. If this process takes you longer than 12 hours something is seriously wrong. Probly cost you $1500 then strip the other one down and sell the parts.

I sold a top 3L with the gearbox about 12 months ago for $1650 as a guide to how cheap they are.
My mind is like a steel trap....quite dangerous because i forget where i left it.

Badlux I just finished rebuilding mine (see comments under your post in genral chat) cost me $ 2700 total but over 1000 of that was for work on the block and crank plus getting the injectors reconditioned.
Its not that hard to do yourself but it does take a while. I done mine myself (except for the honing of the cylinders, crank machining, pressing bushes etc. and it has taken about five weeks with a couple spent waiting for gear and only working on it on weekends.
In the 1700 left after the block and crank was also a new head cause the old one was cracked plus extra's such as idler pulleys, thermostat, oil relief valves, etc pretty much every thing exept block, crank, cam and conrods replaced
engine australia sell a rebuild kit which has all gaskets, pistons, bearings etc for around $580 or 560 I can't remeber. but you need to pull your block out and find out how far over size you need pistons, rings and if the crank need to be machined then bearings too. you need to know this before you order the kit.
For a machanic to do it of you depending on what you get done and what you need to be replace i would say minimum cost would be in the order of $3000 and then it would have to be a second rate job using a lot of the old gear. One of the bigest problems with that is if you use old gear such as idler and tensioner pulleys on the timong belt and two months later they seize you have blown your dough cause for the sake of savin $40 you have to start again.
I chose to do my own engine for that reason I KNOW what I am driving
If you wanna talk to me about any of it shot me a pm and i'll send you my phone number if you want!
Cheers Pete
