Just a question for anyone in the Know.
Just setting up my hydro steering and wanted to get some idea how big a resevior people run and wether they run coolers as well. Was thinking of running at least 5 litres of fluid and an auto cooler.

Sam i think it is a good idea 2 run a cooler coz i remember there was a post awhile ago bout runnin coolers for hydro and normal power steerin and from memory every1 said it was a benefit.
but as 4 the resivour im not sure

I have run Hyrdo steer for about 18months now. I run an aftermarket chev pwr steer pump. (AGR). i do not run a cooler or additional fluid.
Works great, doesn't get hot enough to cause steer problems.
However on the weekend at XXRC my pump shit itself. But the pump has been in the truck for over 2 years now. with the old setup, not just the hydro.
I am just going to reco the AGR pump, & throw it back in.

The problem is that the standard pwr steering box ( be a 40 series box, 60 / 70 or 80 series or even a chev box) they all generate a lot of heat. which causes them to boil. give them ram assist as well & i think it would generate even more heat.
If running full Hydro, you should not need a cooler. i think my truck has proven this. even extra fluid has not been required!!!!
It would not hurt to have it. but when you jam a 454 in the sucker, you start to appreciate very compact accessories.... & avoid adding unnecessary equipment.

I think why yours boils is maybe because you are running hyrolic assist and you are trying to jam a lot of fluid through the very small valve in your stock PS box. So I think that you are going to need a cooler.
I guess in Pistol Pete's case with running full hyro he doesent get the heating problems cause its a full hydraulic system and not some bootie fabbed POS like yours.

Interested in thoughts on the electric pwr steer pump idea
Subaru's are not the only car to do this the current model astra and vectra both have electric pwr steer pumps
they seem to wrok well on a small front wheel drive but not sure how they would stand up to the abuse of a 4x4 even with small tyres (compared to you guys)

the pump would be FAWKED n a vehicle that had a locked front and bigger than 31s if it ever came off pavement
i was purely thinking about for the rear, the little pump may be able to hold up to this?!?!?!?!
