Help me buy my first sierra!
Help me buy my first sierra!
Hey all.
Long time reader, first time poster.
Im thinking of getting a sierra. Naturally i have about 1000 questions, and i have found most of the answers on this forum already but still would like your opinions on buying a sierra.
...what would you expect to pay for a hard-top coily sierra in sydney? I have been looking around and there aint much to choose from and most seem a little pricy to me. i have seen some at $9000 or more!!! Would it be possible to pick one up for anything under $6000? Or am i really going to need to spend more like $8000
...also, what would i pay for a removable hardtop?... I just want the security of a hardtop.
if you interested, im thinking of eventually having a hardtop coily (because it will be a daily driver) with simply a 2 in lift and some 29's and some custom bar work. simply but effective i reckon.
Sorry for all the elementary questions, i did a search and could't really find a price guide
thanks
jamie

When I bought a 'glass lid for my sierra 10yrs ago it cost $1400 fitted, in plain white without hood lining. Definitely worthwhile for daily driver and in summer I usually used just the hatch to keep the sun off but back canopy off to keep it's open feel. u can just carry the front hatch tossed in the back if weather looks suss.
Worth considering a roof lining of some type to cut down on cabin boom though as they are louder than a hardtop. I miss my sierra.

Everybody warned me. I listened hard and nodded. I shuddered. I wept.

Well we got our 89 soft top sierra for $2500.
With -
Freshly rebuilt 1.3 and near new springs and shocks (cheap shit pulled them off soon after )
It was a bit rough round the edges with a few dents, little bit of rust (nothing major) and a tear in the back window.
But suited what we wanted to do with it.
So keep hunting for a bargain it will leave you with more money for tyres and lockers
Here is what ours looked like a few days after we bought it.

Welcome!!!!
If you are dead set on the Coily, then make sure you know what you may come across in terms of mods and also the old "piston No 3 at 90,00ks" trick! Having said that, I paid $4100 for my '96 soft top about a 8 m onths back. She was a bit rough around the edges (im only gunna ruff it up anyway!!), but came with...lift, nice stereo, extractors, hard top and pretty clean interior. When i got her she had about 200,000ks on the clock..30,000 and im putting in a new donk - yep piston No 3!!!
This was in Melbourne, and i would consider it a very good buy, but if your patient..ya never know what you'll find!!
Also, I second oldzooks sentiments on the 'cabin boom' with the hardtop on - get it lined (i havent yet!!!)...softop in summer
Good luck

If you shop around youl find a good one! I paid $3500 for mine with f&r lockers, Warn winch, Small lift, 2 peice hard top, Roll bar, Cumfy seats, Sterio system and 30" tyres. I have also brought a ute style soft top, Snorkel, Made some rear drawes, some full doors, rock rails, put abit more lift on it and a new motor. So far it owes me about $4500, not bad for something that keeps up with jeeps with 33's easily. Shop around and you should find a good one
Built swb sierra, building a lwb sierra ute and have a dmax for family camping
I brought a Holden drover, same car different name, for 300 bucks, no rego, and it goes, starts up first time most time in cold morning, already past 200,000km mark, i reckon it'd make it worthwhile on that amount. it's a softie leafy NT.
ATM, putting in WT diff in, different bullbar
Will post pic when i figure out 'how to post pic'

thanks for the help guys. Good to see there are some cheaper coilys around that what i have seen.
So the coily motor is a bit of a dud ey...first i have heard of that. Do they all do it?
No wonder i have seen a few with 'recon motor' and fairly low kms.
What does it cost to recon a engine?
thanks again.

for parts to recon the engine depends how much you want to replace thou you would be looking at a few hundred for partsjunek wrote:thanks for the help guys. Good to see there are some cheaper coilys around that what i have seen.

Use a site like photobucket, it's as simple as clicking on browse, choosing the photo you want, then hitting submit. It then adds it to your album, and gives you all the coding you need to insert it as an image, or any number of other ways.MudRoza wrote:Will post pic when i figure out 'how to post pic'

My guess is that because the coily was only released/built for 2 years, it makes me think that it was a sort of a hit-and-miss experiment for suzuki, which evidently arose as the Jimny.bluemq wrote:If every coily has had the same problem, why on earth hasn't suzuki covered it as a recall / factory bug with the affected motors?
Or is it because by the time it's happened, its almost always out of warrenty ?
Whether they did enough testing and km's to encounter this problem is the question.
Either way, i think the coily is a great little model, whilst being a bit harder and more expensive to modify, it goes as good as it looks.
Ive got a 98 hardtop, and im only considering putting a 2" spring lift and rear locker for additional mods over the 30" muds and 3" body it already has.
Oh and my car is approaching 160,000kms and as far as i know, the eng is still original.
Cheers
