Which battery do you winch with?
Fot those with dual batteries. Which battery have you got winch connected to and why?
Also what type of batteries do you have (deep cycle/cranking etc) and what method do you use for splitting the batteries (smart solenoid, seperator etc etc)
I know what I use and why but I read something the other day which surprised me so be interesting to see which way people are doing it.
thanks

Exide Extreme
Piranha Battery system.
and the survey says..........................
winch off main battery. If you winch off dual battery and don't have full 12 volts, you can cook the winch motor.
I use Bond 650cca for main (starter, winch, compressor) and century deep cycle for aux (4x100w hella's, 2x55w reverse light, fridge on 24/7
this is the first time i've had a deep cycle, usually get about 2yrs out of a cranker as aux battery. I am experimenting to see pros/cons of deep cycle.
Are you in Melb, cossie? if so check out John from BDS, 288 Wickam Rd Moorabbin, ph 9555 8588
He's very helpful, honest advice and very reasonable on price

There is another way of doing this. I do it but with 24V and it didn't occur to me to do this until now. You can have separate battery just for winching that charges off the same alternator. All you have to do is run a separate charge line from the alternator. You can run an emergency starter line off this battery as well. I've done it off one of my batteries that I use for my winch

i run mine of the secondry but also have a 1000amp battery interconnect for long periods of winching. this way if my motor stalls i can start it after winching, or if my start battery is rooted all i have to do activate the inter connect and away i go. personnel choice either way is just as good.
also my batteries are both start batteries. whiches like the higher current draw of start batteries.

MUD, MUD, GLORIOUS MUD!
I know this is wrong, but Disco Dave uses two 12v crappy junk-yard Ford/Commodore type batteries in paralell and in over 12 months of use so far no problems with the X9. Careful not to run them flat, or let the engine stall though!
Ideally will upgrade to deep cycle batteries one day with isolator and dual charging stuff...

I figured that would be the response, and that is how I have always done it.
Only reason I asked is because I was reading an old 4wd monthly I found lying around the other day and they appeared to be recommending to not use the main battery for winching

Yeh, i recall reading the same crap years ago too. I did the same thing for a couple of years untill i cooked my winch motor. Luckily they exchanged it for a newy without question (i had re-wired it to main by then

Ok, why does hooking it to the second battery cook the winch motor ?
I was going to hook up two smaller 380ah batteries in parallel. Is this a big NO. no. ? Ive got a zook, so the smaller batteries will fit better.
At the moment Im only using one small 360ah battery. but it boils if I use it to long. Pulls far better than I thought it would. Have to run the motor at about 2000rpm. or winch wont work.
Sorry about the Hi-jack.

you should use a 750cca battery minimum for a warn 9000lb. Don't use a deep cycle for winching. Use your starter battery for the winch and have a backup battery hooked up via a switchable solenoid for starting if your starter battery becomes to flat. Hook the switching wire to the second battery in case the first battery gets to flat. The second battery can be a deep cycle as long as you have a proper battery isolater system not just a solenoid set up. The switchable solenoid should be switched manually only.

They use stud terminals, so you'll need to buy the screw on posts for them as well - can take a photo if this needs explaining
