1HDT IDLING ROUGH.

Post by 80UTE »

The missus's 80 with the 1HDT s**t the turbo a month ago ran on its engine oil and bolted ETC ETC, anyway put on a new turbo, pulled out the injectors and and pumped out all the oil in the pots. Stared her up and after burning all the oil in the exhaust runs like a dream. "BUT" when starting in the morming (cold engine) it was missing and blowing out white smoke and smells like fuel. When the engine is warmed up ( approx 1 minute running ) it runs like a dream. Suspected an injector u/s or bent rod (lowering comp in one pot, engine would not crank over when turbo s**t it self hydrauliced on oil) done a comp test all pots between 450-500 psi so all well within spec, pulled the injectors and sent them to be checked and one nozzle was u/s so all tested and set up refitted Saturday. Startered it this morning and still the same, being a 1HDT with direct injection it does not need to be glowed to start and have never needed to. Im suspecting a glowplug has S**t itself and this may be causing the misfire when cold. Checked the manual and Aussie spec Cruisers have the "Super glow" system but cant find text on how it works. Im suspecting it keeps glowing after the engine is running for a short time untill enough heat for it to sustain good combustion. Does anybody know specific details of how the glow system works ?

My old 2H does the same thing, I asked the old bloke at the local truck workshop, (he has been it the deisel game a long time), what the problem was. He suggested that is was one of the pots down on compression and that pot does not fire untill it warms up and the rings are able to hold the pressure to cause the deisel to fire. I still have not done a compression test to test his theory yet but it may be something to try.

Hope this helps.

Wally,

It's been a while since I had my 80, but system has 2 relays and 2 heat settings (one relay on LH inner guard up near bonnet hinge I think, other is down behind battery - follow heavy lead from battery).

One relay supplys power to the system, the other bridges out the resistor located in the no. 5 cylinder intake runner. Should be full power to plugs initially depending on what the glow system temp sender says (green connector, screwed into oil cooler housing), then power to plugs is reduced.

I'd isolate the whole glow system for a start (disconnect "glow" fusible link at battery) because as you say the DI engine shouldn't need any glowing. That will soon tell you if it's one plug, the system or something else (bent rod :-( )
