Hi Folks,
Had a search but couldn't find what I was looking for - The missus has a 1992 JLX 2 Door Soft Top, 1.6Lt Carby Motor
Currently, It doesn't have any mods at all but what it does have is the worst fuel consumption...
It's getting about 320-340klms per tank. According to the manual, its a 42L tank. Thats about 12-13L per 100klm!!!
This week it got down to 310klms! She does mostly driving to work which is all the way up Beadesert Rd (Brissy) so it's not really dense traffic...
Is anyone else having these sorts of crap figures???

i get bout that 12-13 L/100k's in my sierra with the same 1.6 carbie motor. However mine is lifted with bigger tyres and lower gears so it revs a bit higher, so i would expect a stock vitara to be better than that, I would have thought around 9-10 L/100km. Maybe a vit driver could put up a figure that they get.

Give it Major tune before you go about doing things to it like efi.
Flush everything and replace all the filters (oil and air), a cleaning additive to the fuel tank, clean out or the vacumm hoses, warm it up and run a carbi spray in short burst
Things like timing, spark plugs, ignition leads and FUEL filter will probably rob power without you even noticing it, leaving you compensating it with extra leadening of the foot.
No ones said it but check your compression.
Lastly make sure she is warming up the engine before driving off, even if you are in queensland. i never wait for the temp gauge to show it's warm (cause it reads the coolant not the block) but i do give it a few moments to lube up and drop the revs slightly on it's own before rolling down my driveway.

Stock I had one that got around 9l/100km and I have another one that does around 10l/100km on stock rubber and I know that it is running a little rich but to alter it the carby needs opening up so I haven't bothered. I get your type of consumption with the 32's on but I do tend to use the loud pedal a bit. A good going over as described above would be worthwhile doing.

I get about 9-10L / 100 in my vit. I think the most i've done on a tank is about 360km . I don't particularly want to find just how far it goes and end up stuck on the side of the road.
To work out fuel consumption you should forget about tank size unless you fill it completely full and run it untill it stops you can't work it out.
Easiest way is to fill up do a couple hundred km then fill up again at the same pump and work it out on that.

I wasn't particularly keen on going to the effort of changing over to EFI, As I've heard it can be a bitch to get it all running smooth once you've started the process...?

now on 235x75r15s, with Extractors & 2" exhaust 10 - 12 L/100 by the speedo (uncorrected) Still shows about 430 km on a tank ... so still close to a true 460km
A lot also depends on how you drive too.

i hav a 96 4door v6 vit and it chews the fuel. i go though about $30 a day just getting to and from work. that is about 160k's a day but still. when i bought it i assumed that it would be a better highway driver but it does not seem so. iv been told that changing to lower gear ratio's can improve low range an also fuel consumption overall. is this the case? and if so how? beacuse im just about to upgrade the whole car so it would help to get that altered while im at it. cheers

My Vit runs ok with all the mods I have done to it ARB Bullbar, rear steel bar, full bash plates, large diff guard and 30" tyres I get 10litres per 100klms
