Checking & Adjusting Diff backlash.

Post by hairy one »

Hi peoples. Posted this questions on the back of another thread.buying second hand but thought the title isn't very descriptive of what I am asking.

How do I check the amount of backlash on my Rr diff & how do I adjust this. I am presuming that all the MM's diffs are the same but I have have a Gen 1 2.5 diff.

Also Is there a place in Sydney's west that balances or checks tail shaft balance?

You have to take it out of the housing, lock the pinion flange in a vice and rock the crown wheel fully back and forth in its travel. You need a dial gauge set up at 90 degrees to a C/W tooth measuring travel
You adjust this by slackening off the cap bolts and rotating the special nuts
equal amounts in opposite directions to move the C/W closer to the pinion without over loading the side bearings. It is not that easy find someone experianced to do it for you for beer.
