rockhoppers 111% in mine would be stupid, have you thought about diffs instead????

Have you thought of dual transfers? One of the blokes I go wheeling with has a rig with dual transfers and a 3.8v6 auto he seems to only use it on downhill as well
If you coverted a petrol you may already have 4.8 diffs
Silly question but you have discs all round?
If you dont have panel damage you ain't trying hard enough

number of teeth on your crown wheel divided by the number of teeth on your pinion = your diff ratio

39/8=4.875

Some pinions have different numbers of teeth
If you dont have panel damage you ain't trying hard enough
