Front shocks for coily (ive searched!)

Hey all

After some shock tower cracks on my car its become apparent that the front shocks are too short and are going full travel fairly often.

There is nothing available "off the shelf" for the coily that I can find, I have heard that you can weld the spring collar onto alternate shocks though.

Any recommendations for a good shock to mod this way?
I was going to get Ranchos but have heard the valving is a bit harsh.

Ideas appreciated!

you could try a set of coilovers , how much you wanna spend/make yourself.

I had Ultimate Suspension brand shocks under my coily when I had it ....they werent to bad ....but try RBZOOK and HRZOOK they had there's setup with larger lifts ...although they have both now been converted to lux diffs and different coil /shock setup ...

hey mate i had trailwin shocks there were good for linch suspention lift

they were travel well and ride was smooth

i get them inported through grp auto which no longer is in business

from memory they were quite expensive.

other than that there isnt really much you can do could run 2 inch sring lift and cut the tower down 2 inches also. thou wount make the most of the lift just stock suspension just 2 inch raised.

How much lift are you running?
Coilers will crack shock mounts with correct spring/shock lengths. I have welded one up before.

I have seen Koni's built with welded on collars, this was done by GT suspension in Melbourne.

One of the biggest problems with shock fitment is that the tower is very small in diameter and will not fit a conventional aftermarket shock. coil front shocks are very small diameter and most shocks will foul on the mount.

When you add all the problems up with the front end, it may well be better to cut it all off and go to coilovers and a dobbin x link front end, space permitting.

any shock that works with the stock mount will be too short to work with a decent amount of travel regardless of the amount of lift - the design of the front end was set up around 5" of travel.

Im running 2" raised springs (kings) and Suzisport shocks (long travel) in the rear.

Ive got KYB shocks in the front but they're shit, stock length anyway.

Im pretty sure theres a place you can send your collars to and they send back modfied shocks? (dont know what they use)

The problem I have is that the car is used 80% onroad, I really cant justify spending heaps of cash and a whole new front end setup.

I understand what your saying about the diameter of the tower, its tiny.
Is it worth going with some Konis or something?
As long as there enough travel for the 2" springs im happy.

I think the dobin x link done on coiler diffs would be a waste of time and money. I would upgrade the diffs as well in the process. The biggest problem with coilers is that you hit the modification wall very early. it doesnt take much modifying before the logical thing to do is a complete driveline and suspension upgrade.

I'm welding on the upper spring/ shock mount from a jimny onto my coily in the next few weeks. Using jimny coils and custom lower coil mounts.
