Auto trans operating temps?

Post by Vulcanised »

Anybody got any idea of what temp an auto trans will generally work at? I know the radiator cools it, but would a 40-240 C gauge be sufficient to monitor the trans temp? particularly off-road.

After deleting the oil coolers in the radiator entirely and using 2 front mount oil coolers my normal running temps are 45-50 degrees C. A good guide to seeing if your auto has enough temp to run properly is that the torque convertor won't lock up until the auto temps are right. Before going to front mount coolers only my torque convertor would lock up about 8 kms from home. Now it takes about 1-2 kms longer to reach operating temp, I can live with that quite happily.

i drive for 5 kilometres on the highway before i lock my torque converter up (it's hooked up manually) I currently run a cooler bewteen the radiator and the gearbox on the return line. There is a large aftermarket one coming with the trans i got for it on eBay to replace the broken one that is currently in the Patrol
