1fz-fe valve stem seals

hey guys and gals,

i think the valve stem seals are shot as it will blow a heap of blue smoke when you rev it after it has been left idling for a while, the longer you let it idle the more smoke, it then clears and doesn't blow any when reving or driving normally.

Has any one else had this problem?

Is it possiable to change them without removing the head?

What sort of dollars would be reasonable to pay someone to do it for me?

ps. it's a 1998 100s petrol auto with 153000km on it

I'm pretty sure you'll find they are a shim and bucket type and the head will need to be removed!

that's what i was afraid of

any idea on dollars?

does it have to be a toyota dealer to supply new shims?

old man just had this done on our 1fz-fe head cost about $1800 all up for the workshop to do the whole job

was that a toyota dealer or privat mech?

what was wrong with your car? did the remove the head and overhaul the whole thing?

that was a priv mechanic, um it had leaking valve stems, lotsa blue smoke and burnt oil, yeah the head has to be taken off to be done and there is was about 9hrs of labour in the job, plus the cost of getting the head checked and parts etc.

It sounds about right, i had a quote to do mine was similar to that, don't forget its not all labour youv'e got a 24 valve head. I did't get mine done as it doesn't get driven enough.

Yeah have the same problem with mine, but it mainly blows smoke when you first start it, then its clear as.

I`m not going to bother fixing it, once the motor dies it`ll get a gen 3

mine rarely blows smoke on start up if i leave it idling it blows a heap when you rev it

then clears, think i'll get the head done and see what happens i think it to bad to leave

we ran ours like it was for about 3 years as topping up the oil was chaper than a head job (pardon the pun) in the end things started to get worse so we bit the bullet and had hit done

how much oil was it using?

did it only need new valve stem seals to fix it or was there some other parts needed?

um yeah it needed a valve kit and a regrind of the head, n thats it.
