I got a problem with my Hilux LN46. In the past few months my hilux has been blowing alot of white smoke and burning alot of oil.
The tempeture guage sits on a constant tempeture just below half way and the exhaust tip is not oilly.
Has anyone got any ideas on what the problem is and how to over come it? I'm thinking the piston rings need replacing, would there been any other factors contrubiting to this problem.

Burning oil

could be worn/broken rings/bores. you'd have heaps of km on it if it was the original motor, and the L motor is not generally known as a 'stayer'. have the compression tested, will give you an idea of the condition of the rings.
L motor is also very picky about injector condition, pump tune (mix, timing), and valve clearances. if it has any valce seat recession it might have poor compression causing the white (unburned fuel) smoke, but that doesn't explain your oil consumption. generally oil smoke is blueish and hard to distingush from overfuelling smoke (black)
is the motor down on power, rough, or hard to start?

There dosn't seem to be any loss of power, but it is a little hard to start in the morning but after that morning start it kicks in as soon as u turn the key, but i think the glow plugs will need replacing, that will be later down the track. so is the white smoke happening only when the motor is cold? if so then that is a sure sign that one or more glow plugs are dead, especially with the rough running.
if the smoke is BLUE/grey then that is oil smoke, and the problem could be as simple as the sump is overfull - the crank thrashes the oil and vaporises a lot of it and it ends up in the crakcase breater hose which feeds oil into the inlet.
but it is more likely a symptom of blowby (worn rings) causing too high a pressure in the crankcase and forcing oil vapours into the inlet, along with the oil left behing by worn oil control rings, and also possibly leaky valve stem seals.
try upgrading to a thicker 'old engine' oil and hitting it with one of the many 'bottle of rings' type additives available - Wynns, STP, etc, there is a whole shelf of them at supercheap auto.

It's blowing white smoke all the time, and i make sure i don't overfill the sump, it just gone over the 300K kms mark. i've tried all the additives it minimises it abit but not enough.
I'll be getting the think fixed next week, but why i have asked the question is i would like to get a resonable idea with the problem, because the mechanic i going to wants to replace everything but i don't have the money to replace the whole lot, but just want to fix the thinks that need fixing and im not expecting to have the car for another 10 years.
What are your thoughts
