Hi Leon, I like the idea of the standard canister for off road use too. My first creek crossing convinced me of that! :lol: When I get a ram pod it will only be for on road use- I don't fancy using a K&N off road in dusty environments either.

i dont follow.. y wouldnt u use a k an n filter for 4x? it filters better right? more clean air an so on... do tell me.. r there down sides to usin the k an n filter compared to the stock intake set up?

I think what he's getting at is the Rampod would be less protected from getting drowned in water than the OE setup in the 'black-box'.
Once the filter is wet.....makes it pretty useless !

Mind you.....not sure where you're gonna find water that deep that you wouldn't kill the alternator first and end up with loads of electrical problems before worrying about killing the engine !!

Another one of the inherent Feroza / Rocky problems .....the Alternator with internal fan that helps to suck water into it :roll:

The last time (back when mine was standard), I went through some water.....deep enough to just cover the 31" tyres....make the exhaust burble underwater......and just enough to have it flowing inside the vehicle, destroying my camera lens that I had left on the floor in the rear !!

Car stopped because of electrical issues.....made mistake of trying to start it again.... water ingress through exhaust !

You don't need the water to be very deep for it to spread right through your engine bay- your radiator fan will do the job for you! :lol:

A K&N sitting right next to the fan is guaranteed to cop a lot of water, which is then likely to get sucked through the oiled cotton and possibly end up going into the engine. Personally I don't want to take the risk.

The standard canister is also designed to help stop heavy dust from even getting to the air filter by swirling the air before it hits the filter element.

A K&N filter isn't really designed to cope with heavy dust like a 4WD can encounter- K&N have got "prefilters" for fitting over many of their filters for this reason. However I don't think one is available to suit the Feroza podfilter.

Don't get me wrong- I like K&N's and have used them on my road cars for the last 13 years. I just don't think they're the best for off road use.

so then should i jus leave the stock intake system on there? any way i can increase power on that engine other than the exhaust??? any other mods i can do for the engine??

Talking about intakes..anyone know of a snorkel that can be easily adapted to fit a feroza, somethinf like TJM or ARB snorkels that may be adapted or is there an easier way of making one that still looks and seals ok?

hmm.. i will install an electric fan sometime soon.. hopefully, either with a thermo switch or a flip switch... so i dont throw so much water around. i dont intend to go into very deep water, as the doors leak water (learned that the hard way) but i'd be more concerned with the water splashin around as i move forward.. creating a bow in front... what can i do to help reduce engine/electrical problems there when it comes to water? replace the alternator or what? :?: :?:

Good idea....switch off thermo when going through water !! :cool:

If you're going through deep water, always throw a 'blind' over the front of the car and take the crossing in 2nd low, constant speed to just keep the bow wave in front.....you really minimise the risk of getting water in the engine bay by doing this.

I ended up replacing my alternator with one from a Commodore 80A, external fan, but this involved making new (read - dodgy) brakets. It held up, but didn't look 'factory' !! I reckon you could put a 160-180A Alternator in, for the one time you need to use it to weld something !!

How cool would that be :cool:

uh... forgive me here.. but wtf is a blind? :oops: an take it in second low? i figured i'd go in 1st gear, 4 low... works great...

A blind is just a tarp or piece of canvas that you strap or tie to the front of your car so it pushes the water away from the front of the vehicle creating a bow wave. I like 2nd low for water crossing... some speed but not oo much.
