Afew queations for a 92' 4 Runner

Not long ago i bought a 92' 4 runner, 2.8L Diesel with a 2" lift and 35" Baja mud claws, and i just wanted to ask afew questions about it.

it has a duel fuel tank, its 105L in total, and i havnt completely emptied it yet, so i dont know the fuel consumption, but it is not pretty, and compared to my brothers 2.8L diesel hilux ute, it has no balls what so ever. they are virtually the same car, with almost the same weight, but mine is much more sluggish. so i was thinking about getting a turbo put in it and was looking for some advice on what turbo, and a price range :?: i am sure if i get more power out of it i will use it, so fuel consumption will probably be worse.

i was also thinking about getting a service on the injectors, possibly getting them refurbished as it could improve fuel efficiency and reduce the smoke (its not heaps, but its more that other diesels that i have seen) and was also wondering if that was the right way to go, and then again, a possible price range :?:

any advice will be extremely appreciated :D :D

Check your diff ratios you need 4.88 to run those tyres and I think the diesels are 4.11
That will solve your sluggish problem and smoke I am guessing that it is black which means she is labouring.

To check your ratios divide the number of teeth on your pinion gear by the number of teeth on your crown wheel crown wheel 39 teeth pinion gear 8
39/8=4.875

A diesel 92 will have 4.3's i believe.

He will still need 4.88s and the practice of replacing the front diff.
As I am guessing it has'nt been SASed

The other thing that causes smoke on diesels is a carbon build up or glazing

Yep... change your diff ratios to 4.88's, you can pick them up from here every now and then for under $500 easily, and then get them installed (note, you cannot use a solid axle model in the front, as ths ring gear is 7.5', not 8')

How many km's has the motor got on it? 300+ and its probably getting a bit long in the tooth for a turbo (depends entirely upon service/life history of course) But you can get the turbo gear of a surf 2.4 and fit this on, should be able to pick it up for under $1k here or ebay, and then a tune by a workshop ~$500 In most cases a turbo should improve economy as you are using less accelerator and getting a better burn rate from the fuel, however the trackabout comp 79 series uses in the order of 21l/100km, but it is rather, rather worked (factory they use <11l/100) For a full supply/installation/tune by a workshop will be about $3k minimum if your not handy/happy on the tools.

Injectors - should be able to be rebuilt by a diesel workshop for ~$50 each, the labour component when i got mine was $360 R&R for all 4 IIRC.

Another thing to consider would be getting a pump rebuild, and timing belt changed.

I got pump/injectors/tappets done/timing belt done last november for $1500

I used to have a sd25 and fixed that problem with penrite and power plus addidive the blue stuff all the truckies seem to use it and a lot of skippers

hey guys,

as for the sluggishness, i am actually changing down to some hancook road tyres(i think they are stock 31" road tyres, so muuuuch smaller) once i run the tank out to check the difference in the fuel consumption, as unfortunatly i wont be able to go 4wding for a while because of uni, so i thought i would save the life of my mud tyres, and my fuel. so what would happen if i was to change the gear ratio, and then change back to the smaller road tyres ??

as for the turbo, the car has done 250,000, and i dont have the money as yet, but i am still thinking about it. i mean the car with these tyres on it has no power what so ever, once you get it to a speed, its fine, but getting it there is a problem.

however i am getting the in jectors serviced/ reconditioned, that one is on my list as it isnt to expenceive.

anymore advice will be greatly welcomed, thanks heaps guys,

ive got 3" sus and 2" body and 33's look like they just clear the inner guards on full lock, all on a surf.

mm 35's fit hey, (turns to wife)" just ducking down the shop babe, be back soon" :lol:
