FJ40 Disc Brake Conversions
Im in the process of restoring a 1978 FJ40. (drums all round) and wanting to convert the front end to discs. I've come across from a later model 40, swivel hubs / discs. After speaking to two brake specialists, they both advised me from against doing the conversion, as theve both seen the LWB and tray back 40's have massive rear brake lock up probs after this conversion. Obsviously Id have to upgrade the booster as well... Any one hear any stories about the same or know of solutions? (legal ones?) cheers

Im here for the sausage!
I have done the conversion to a 78' FJ45 tray back. It will lock up on heavy brake applications but so do alot of other utes. At least it will pull up straight, with drums allround it was a new adventure in braking every time you hit the brake pedal especially after driving through mud. Adjust your driving style & remember it's a 4B not a racecar & if that fails fit a bigger bullbar
Change the brake Master cylinder to a 60s
I think you will find that will change the bias going to front and back and it will pull up like a dream.
It fixed mine.
EDIT: and yes it is just a bolt on procedure.
60s for front discs and rear drums,
80s for discs all round.
