The 4BT is a great engine, but a factory toyota TD 6cyl would probably run rings around it on-road. They need to do the conversions because they missed out on all the good factory diesels...

It's a common thing happening over there these days because the cummins engines are cheap and plenty, as are parts. toyota diesel motors alone are rare as, let alone parts.
I've also seen it done on a 60 series. the 4 inch lift (spring over on the 60) is necessary just to clear the sump, as they're a very tall motor.
