going to buy a zook
going to buy a zook
hello all.
i am 16 and getting my Ls soon and for my first car i want a zook. the reason being there cheap and capable. just wondaring what i should look for when getting a zook as in engine km, parts ect. i would also like it to be a good capable 4wd. when i go offroading it will be at most likely be at beaches but i might also hit up some trails.
so what should i look for?
also if anyone has one for sale let me know. i got around 5-6g and being a P plater (when i get them) i cant have engine mods which sucks. but will a snorcal pass?
thanks

a snorkal isnt an engine mod so should be fine. by a a 1988 or newer zook. for your money you should be able to get one in very good condition with some money left over for suspension and tyres. parts are pretty cheap and maintanance straight forward so kms is not a massive issue. anything that has done over 150,000 kms is going to be needing maintance, good luck.

I got mine with all the stuff in my sig line minus a couple of things for$3500!
Shop around and youll find some good ones. Just make sure theres no rust and if it's near 200,000k's you might need to re biuld the engine some time soon!
I get my P's at the end of feb but have had mine sence just before i got my L's!
I have grown up with 4x4's and this is the most fun with my dad's wrangler coming in second but certainly the most capapble and it's all done on a budget!

where can i get mods for zooks?
In your backyard. Seriously, zooks are the most owner modification friendly rigs (for small sorta mods anyway ) . Look in the bible at the top of the page. Figure out what mods you wanna do, look into them, then ask any questions. If you want to run hardcore tyres, just have two sets. I do and it works out fine, MTR's for road, swampers offroad. For your price range, look for early 90's WT shorty or ute if you find it. Get the best condition example. Your budget should allow you to get a good condition rig with low (for age) km's. If you find one with a few modifications that is a bonus, but remember that if its modified, then its most likley been used hard before. Also, be careful buying a modified example till you get the hang of driving on and off-road. Learning to drive with an auto-locker would be interesting Overall, ENJOY IT.

Ride will be stiff. Extended shackles often make ride softer, so why he took them off i dunno. Note that shackles are pointing towards centre of car at rest, this will provide rough ride, looks like the springs ahve too much arch, or are too short for the arch they have been given. Exhaust hole means rego knock back instantly. Also bodylife etc should technically be engineered. Your rego dude might knock this back too. Insurance will run if you tell them bout it. Pinging is bad for a motor, if he has thrashed it then might have damage internally. Check year of manufacturer, looks liek it should read 1994 from trim and flares. WT flares and later early to mid 90's grill on vehicle (88.5 and later yearmodels are WTR - Wide track). KM's are high too, you can find a lower better condition one for that money for sure. IMHO he wants too much for it, but the value of something is only what its worth to someone I am always a bit dubious of people who advertise their car but make mistakes like year model etc. AND CALL A ZOOK A BLOODY JEEP!!!!!!!!!!!! God im a picky bastard
Note, this is my opinion only, dont take it as the word of god ( i am god but thats another story )

While i'm not trying to talk you out of buying a modiffied rig, remember that if its modified, it may have already been threased offroad. A stocker from a hair dresser that has been looked after will be in better shape. Also, epsecially for you being young and still needing to learn to drive, a modified rig in the hands of someone with inexperience driver can get you in a world of trouble real quick. Just something to think about.

To put on 31" tyres comfortably, you need a 2" spring lift (around $800 up for a good one installed), a 2" body lift ($350ish)and some wider rims for the tyres ( around $50 new). Then 31" tyres cost about $100 up. On 31" tyres be aware that you need to drop the gearing to drive it. This is usually done through transfer gears, which are aropund $1000 i believe. So not as cheap as first expected.
yer i know about rockhopper gears. is a body lift a must? also can i make my own body lift?
also wont i need ext brake line?

Why do you want claws so much?
There ussually a bit wider then normal tyres. I guesse thats good in the sand though!
As for cutting when mine rubbed they rubbed on the wheel arch on the in side so you can't really cut that or else your tyres would be in the car!
If i was you i would buy a stocker just get extended shackles, weld the rear diff get some 29's untill you know the car and go from there.
Mine had a fair bit of stuff done but more of an apperence thing apart from the lockers. But from what i've heard what i've said up a bit is what most people do and they do what they want it to do.
In the future i will probably go to 33's and stop there for a while but i only really just know the car now and what it will do and it's been about 2 years!
My 2c worth!

Dude you need to get to know your car first before you go for major mods!
For extended shackles i got some flat steel and some square tube and welded it up! Cost $15.
If the new laws com in abou 2 inch in suspension, 2 inch in body and 2 inch in tyres your gonna be stufed with a spring over.
Fair enough the claw looks awsome but there not the best on the market.
Why do you want to go so big off the start line? Mine keeps up and some times go's furthey than cars with 33 inch tyres and lockers and stuff just because it's so light and is a narrow track so it stays out of the ruts!
At the start you said it would mostly be for the beach and stuff so why do you want big tyres and mud tyres? All terain are better on sand then a mud tyre!
Just get a stocker and go from there don't just go straight for major mods because there a VERY capable car straight off the production line!
